Mace - does it exist in Andalucia

Postby peteroldracer » Mon Dec 12, 2016 8:29 pm

Our recipe for leek & potato soup calls for a blade or two of mace, and it really lacks without it. We used to buy it in those little green boxes of herbs, but have not seen any for months. Anyone come across it recently? It does not help that a web search keeps throwing up some sort of action game rather that the little bits of bark!

I came across iHerb.com which sells to Spain - at least they had ground mace - if that's any help?

Thanks, but it is the blades we are after.

The only place I know that might have it is Iranzo in Nerja..

It is the outer husk of Nutmeg, so that should be an alternative if you cannot find it.

Sorry to be pedantic, Sid.
If, as you say, it IS the outer husk of the nutmeg then the outer husk can hardly be an alternative (or did you mean nutmeg could be an alternative?) And you are right of course.
Mace blades are readily available on amazon uk but not sure about price and postage costs.

I do find it strange that although the Spanish use lots of herbs and spices (there must have been more than twenty types in Iranzo) mace is not one of them.

I meant that nutmeg could be used as an alternative seasoning as, from my experience, it tastes much the same. It is not commonly used. I only use it when making classic English sausages.

Well worth a try..........Jesus Vaca, Calle Reinedero, Velez Malaga. If you have never been there you should. Amazing shop selling loads of herbs and spices and loads more. The smell as you walk in is intoxicating.

For those, like me, who try to check the street on a mapping service, it's name is "Calle Reñidero"
