Now In
Re: Now In
Our local branch has stopped the focaccia bread though which I thought was quite popular. Things come and go and it's always the items we like that seem to disappear after a while

Re: Now In
I couldn't find any in the huge Mercadonna in Almunecar. Evelyn, what brand was the Feta you found? Hopefully the real Greek stuff not the rubbish from northern Europe.

Re: Now In
Lidl's sometimes has the real Greek Feta (and halloumi) when it's Greek week. I did buy some but although it was well within its sellby date it was sour when I opened it which was a disappointment. I do wonder about Lidl's storage units as I've had a lot of 'off' stuff from there which I've never had from Mercadona.
Re: Now In
Mucky Donna has the highest turnover I think, although the local Lidl will be close I would think.
Pity about your bread but on the bright side young Ana is back for the summer from University, everything a chap could want pretty , bilingual, ans smart, she is doing a Masters in Psychology.

No problem to get authentic feta here in Las Palmas even the smaller supermarkets stock it
Re: Now In
Can you get halloumi?

Couldn't find it in our local Mercadona.
I asked an assistant and they said that the stores do have different stock. I know that is the case as we were surprised at the selection of cakes and bread at the one near Granada airport for example.

Lidl do it when it's their 'Greek week'. A friend who loves the stuff buys loads and freezes it.katy wrote:Can you get halloumi?

Re: Now In
I did read that there is a shortage of Haloumi as it has become so popular for BBQs in the UK that the Cypriots cannot keep up with the demand.
That suggests that we will soon see some dubious alternatives made in N Europe, just like the “fake” Feta.
I love it and griddle it with a citrus dressing, courtesy of Delia.

Re: Now In
Yes there may be a shortage. I have never tried it. But after reading your recipe El Cid, I am definitely trying it.
Re: Now In
Sounds like a good recipe. didn't think of capers I would tweak it a bit as not keen on coriander, maybe just mint or herbs de provence. I like it sprinkled with chile flakes too. Any suggestions?

Parsley or fresh mint would be OK. Basil if you like it.

Our Mercadona now has Feta and Mozzerella. Hacendado brand, in Tubs of Brine, in a little basket!....not bad at all!
