Raspberries

Postby Lavanda » Mon Aug 07, 2023 6:25 pm

I love raspberries especially with my morning cereals and as we grow the things in the north of Extremadura we have lots of them in the shops all summer long. However, no matter what I do, and how I store them, they go mouldy really quickly. I have even taken to placing them one by one apart on a double layer of kitchen paper on the top shelf of the fridge. Nope. They still go mouldy after two days.

Any advice on keeping raspberries for longer than two days, anyone?

At least I am not the only one with mouldy raspberries after two days.

Thanks, Enrique. I'll try the vinegar tip.

I spread mine out on greaseproof paper & layer them in the freezer. Once frozen, I bag them up & keep in the freezer. They last for ages - I've still got a couple of bags from last year which are fine - probably a good thing, as this year with all the rain, they're not looking so good :-(

Of course, you could jam them, or they make a very tasty icecream !

Raspberry ice cream? Good idea! I make fig ice cream every year when we have lots of figs and that is always nice.

We buy our raspberries in Mercadona. They last in the fridge for about 6 days in the punnet.

Fig ice cream is best done with ripe figs. Cut them in half and scoop out the insides. Squish the pulp through a sieve to get the fig mixture nice and smooth. Make the ice cream with your preferred ingredients: milk, cream, eggs, sugar, etc and stir in the fig mixture. Freeze.

Black figs are best for this recipe as the pulp is already very smooth.

Lavander, Thankyou, I will look into it.

We used to have blackberries in the garden, but never had rasberries.

Raspberry update and I hope the Mods do not take this as an advert ...

We have just about the most delicious raspberries ever in our Mercadona right now. In fact, we have been having them most of the winter and they are not only big and juicy but very flavourful. I am washing and drying them and then freezing them in small batches to keep them optimum. Although one packet lasts three days, I tend to buy in bulk in case there are none the next time I go shopping.

Anyway, the carbon footprint of the raspberries is small as they come from Cartaya in Huelva province, Andalucia. They are called Onubafruit Frambuesas and come from the Coop. Agra. Hort. de Cartaya. Wonderful.

We eat them all year round from Mercadona. Yes, recently they have been huge, almost as big as the blackberries they also sell. Strawberries are also very good at the moment.

We have a packet of Mercas rasps every two or three days. They are excellent. Far better than say those at Lidl or Consum.

Havent tried the strawberries as have had bad experiences with out of season strawbs.

Strawberries! The Mercadona also do strawberries and, only in my opinion, they are better than those in Carrefour or anywhere else. The strawberries are packed in such a way that they lie upside down in a biggish flattish tray with the green bit is at the bottom and the strawberries look lovely and red. In fact, just around the green bit they are a little white which, I think, means they have been 'forced'. However, they are simply juicy and delicious with proper old-fashioned strawberry flavour. I eat them at room temperature. These fruits also come from Huelva, so no great carbon footprint. They are from Cuna de Platero, Moguer, Huelva.

I have never been to Huelva although it is only two hours drive away from where I live and the actual coast is three hours away. Lots of Spanish friends go down for long weekends and they are always praising the place so I must go one day ...

I agree, sometimes packaging fruit can make it even more attractive. It's interesting that they produce such delicious strawberries in Huelva. Sounds like an interesting place to visit.
