Does anyone know what type of fish Melva is? Have seen it canned in the supermarket but cannot find a translation for it. :?: Thanks Mick

It is known as Frigate Mackerel. Auxis Rochei or Auxis Thazard.

It's a bit like a cross between a Mackerel and a Tuna. The flesh is very red. I tried it once (fresh) and it is not very good.

The tinned version may be OK.

The tinned melva is good tho and many bars round here offer it as a tapa, as a hot snack on toasted bread. There seem to be a hundred and one names for different types of tuna in Andalusia and when used fresh, melva is one that most people would buy for fish stews rather than eat on its own.
