Going rate for a Babysitter

Postby brenda » Tue Sep 16, 2008 7:50 am

We have friends staying nearby for a edding next Easter who want to book a Babysitter for the night of the Wedding.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the going rate they can expect to pay?

Many thanks.

Hi Brenda, I know a young woman in my area that I believe used to charge €5 per child per hour she is in the velez malaga area If you like I could contact her and let you know if she is still doing it and that I have her charges correct.

I pay my babysitter €5 per hour plus a cab home, pizza and soft drinks and as much TV as she fancies and I also leave here a DVD if she wants.

An 18 year old unqualified student came by my house at the beginning of the summer to offer her babysitting services and said she charged €10 per hour - I don´t believe she got any work ...

Perhaps it is a generalisation and there are many young women who are competent , but the service is hugely undervalued- perhaps you get what you pay for. For someone with experience, references (checkable) and even a reasonably up to date police check you should consider paying between 10 and 20 euros p h, and value it properly- good childcare is very important and hard to find

Wow, the rates really vary, don´t they?
I pay my best friend´s daughter (who´s 18) 10 euros for an evening stint (approx 9pm-12 midnight), for 2 kids. She´s always really grateful for the cash, but I feel a bit of a tight b*gger now, eh?
I leave her snacks, internet access and TV/DVDs - does that count?

My daughter who is 20 babysits regulary for neighbours and friends. She is paid 50 euros from 8pm-1am for watching between 1-3 children. This was what the parents offered her when she first began sitting for them and they have continued to pay her this amount each time she babysits.

I guess one possible consideration is my kids are in bed whereas local Spanish kids are up until midnight/1am easily in the summer.
