What to do about Health insurance?

Postby Wilson25 » Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:54 pm

We're moving to Competa for an initial period of a year (with a view to moving permanently if all goes well). Husband hoping to be employed initially then possibly self employed. Are we better to have private health insurance then register with Spanish health services when we know what work situation is?
Can anyone recommend a private health provider if this is the best option?
There'll be Dad, Mum and 2 kids to consider.

If one of you has been working in the UK for the past two years, you will be entitled to a form E106 from the government which will cover the whole family on the Spanish helath care system for up to 2 years - plenty of time to find out if the move is going to work for you. You can apply for the E106 from the DSS Overseas directorate at Newcastle.

Please be aware that Spanish doctors have the reputation of being one of the best groups for medical professionals in the WORLD. Health service in Spain has a great coverage but waiting list scan be sometimes surprising.
Many Spanish doctors who work for the national health service have their own offices in the afternoon where they work privately and usually are very expensive. Some other doctors work for MUTUAS, private companies for health who offer a full couverage for a monthly fee. The most reknown mutuas in Spain are:
ADESLAS
SANITAS
MAPHRE CAJA SALUD

I joined for quite some time ADESLAS and it was excellent.
Yet being Spanish medical proffesionals you will always get the best service. With this mutuas, you either go to a private hospital of to the doctors private office. And you can use them as many times as you want.
Please ask if you need any other info.
We have doctors in the family so I am quite familiarized (jeje) with the subject.
