A lot of towns celebrate the day with free food produced by the Penas. And you'll find the smaller Penas in the back streets cook up huge paellas in El Puerto. But I wouldn't want to publicise this on the net as "free food" to attract masses of tourists. You only get a cold mouthful before it runs out and you have to queue for ages for that! Worth going to for the crowds but not a free lunch, Jade.
Lis, thanks for the insight. I shall amend the header.
Have not been to any before thus this event would be an eye opener.
I do not know what to expect but guess it would be fun taking everything
in and soaking in the atmosphere.

'I was at that event last year. There is also singing of chirigotas by Carnival Bands from El Puerto, very funny. The time is too early, though. Last year, things did not really start until 1:00 ish. The food is free but you are supposed to pay for drinks @ 1 euro each.
Also : Sunday 26th, Hermandad del Rocio House on C/Los Moros 15, at 12:30 (Don't expect it to start on time, this being Andalucia): Singing by Carnival Coros and various others. Also contest and free sampling of "Ajo Caliente" , a typical winter dish that they serve in the Vineyards; basically it is like a hot thick gazpacho. The Carnival parade starts from the Plaza de Toros at 3:00.
Pass it on'.
