Another one, How to make a small fortune in Spain...Bring a large one (OK I know its old)

We have friends who moved inland to set up a B&B, they are the most unlikely couple to do this as they never even did any work in their own house. She had this dream that she would be able to summon all the locals to work for a pittance and swan around socialising with the guests. Of course, it was a total disaster, they lost lots of money.

As part of a 'project' that I have been 'working on', my Wife and I have visited and stayed in many B&B establishments throughout Spain and France.....And I have to say that the majority of the owners were very disappointed with the results, virtually all are up for sale, and have been on the market for a long time, some for years...The few who were happy with their ventures were all receiving either state or works pensions, so treated the B&B as a sideline, and a good interest, meeting people etc..
Most were excellent, with good facilities and extras that you wouldn't get in a hotel, but some were shoddy, dirty and not welcoming..In one , my Wife opened our room door to find the proprietors 3 year old daughter sat on our bed, totally naked and helping herself to my wife's make-up and perfume,....... and not even an apology from the owner....!
I still think that there is scope for more B&B's, but don't expect to be busy or making buckets of money.
We stayed in BB's owned by British, Spanish, Dutch , German and French people, and paid as little as 35 euros for 2 persons, up to 65 euros...Most also had available an evening dinner for 15/20 euros per head.
I really don't want to put anyone off, but do your homework, and no places too remote...please....

A lot of sense + useful info there from Benidorm.

Unless you can afford to carry considerable non-occupancy go for just 2 or 3 guest rooms that you can cope with without having to employ outside staff - if you have more than 4 rooms, unless you are right in the middle of a resort area, you are going to have long periods where several rooms will be empty. We have just 2 rooms and often have 1 empty apart from July + August; in Winter it is not unusual to go for over a week with no occupancy at all.

Offering Evening Meal increases occupancy but means you are tied day and night.

And don´t expect to get the nightly rates you would in the UK - Benidorms quote of Euro 35-65 is spot on.

its cost me around 52€ and 55€ respectivly per night for a double room in torrimilinos and benalmadena in case anyone was wondering.

my mum used to charge 15 euros per person per night when we used to do it in the old house, including a cooked brekfast.
