Ch5 "Build a New Life in the Country" 21/06

Postby hillybilly » Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:12 pm

For those of you who've retuned your boxes to receive Ch5!

Thurs 21st June's "Build a New Life in the Country" programme features the project of an A dot com member (Monterey), 8pm UK time:

"This week, George is in Spain to follow the Vallance family’s two-year battle to convert a 400-year-old palace into a boutique hotel and family home. George travels to the sunny climes of southern Spain to meet a British couple seeking to build an ambitious dream home. Nick and Lesley want a fresh start and a new challenge following the collapse of their business in the UK.

They move to Spain with their two boys to begin renovations on an old Andalucian palace. The project represents a huge risk for the pair, as they have no experience of the hotel business and do not speak a word of Spanish between them. Even Nick’s 20 years as an architect cannot prepare him for what this project throws at them.

George watches on as deadlines come and go, costs spiral and the kids hate the whole experience – but this plucky couple are determined not to give up."

If you watch closely there may even be a cameo appearance by yours truly (unless I was consigned to the editing room floor!)

I can't really! I was only involved in a small part of the filming at Easter (2006), so for an hour's programme they must have shot loads of footage.

The bit I know about involved the following:

the palace in question being renovated...
the site next door being redeveloped at the same time...
semana santa parades needing to access the street...
scaffolding retaining the next door facade being removed to allow access for the virgin...
building next door collapses...
half of palace goes with it...
all on Easter Sunday...
long battle to get recompense...

I'm the virgin.

No, sorry...
I'm the building surveyor called in to assess the damage.
You can't miss me (if I'm in it at all!): white hard hat, steel toe caps, fluorescent jacket...really, really glam my job!

 Yes, I feel a whole new series coming on...

Actually, yesterday I went to survey a villa in Calahonda. The owner was an absolute dead ringer (looks, dress, behaviour) for "that one" on Marbella Belles. Now I know that they do really exist.

When I saw the builder with the beer gut and ciggie hanging off the bottom lip I got all excited shouting "I've met her", but on closer inspection he was clean shaven, I was so disappointed.

Sorry mate! At least you've got your Xmas cartoon of me to refer back to. I could autograph it for you?
I think maybe I'll have to resurrect the virgin persona for my next telly appearance. I may be some time...

well we missed you, maybe you should have turned up on a Harley with the
PVC jumpsuit rather than the hard hat and donkey jacket  Much better TV!

I actually went to see that property 4 or 5 years ago, I'm glad I walked away once we saw the amount of work! It looks fab after they spent nearly a million euros on it 8)

I watched the programme, and felt drained by the time it was finished,
the poor guy looked about 10 years older.
Wonder if they ever got recompensed by their neighbours.
The work that they had done looked great and I love the way they had furnished the bedrooms.
I wish them the best of luck, they did seem to go through such a rough time.

Not yet, they've got a looooong legal battle on their hands over that.
