Considering move to Andalucia

Postby Shuggah21 » Mon Jun 04, 2018 11:35 am

Good day everyone,
I have looked around on the forum a little but just registered recently.

I am an American expat from California, married to a Ukrainian woman, and residing in Berdyansk for the last two years. Before moving here, a Ukraine expat forum was extremely helpful especially in regards to visas and government paperwork. Now we are considering moving to Spain in three years or so when the daughter finishes school (she wants to stay in Ukraine permanently). It is a bit unstable here for the foreseeable future, plus Russian is a very difficult language for me to learn.

We visited Sevilla in February and liked it very much. I speak rudimentary Spanish from my years in Southern California. I have been studying various online resources regarding areas in Spain. We dont want to live somewhere where Spanish is not the main language, i.e., Catalonia, Galicia. Not interested in tourist areas full of highrises, and reasonably priced housing. Priximity to an airport is not important, as we currently must take an overnight train to get to Borispyl in Kyiv.

I looked at Caceres ( too remote), Avila (too cold), and a few other areas. It seems that the area around Alcala la Real and Priego de Cordoba checks all the boxes. When the time comes, we plan to rent an apartment in Granada for 9-12 months, take Spanish immersion classes, and look at nearby areas on weekends. Meantime I will continue to watch this forum for useful information.

Thanks in advance.

Another welcome to the forum - have you considered Huelva province - the touristy places on the coast are still very spanish orientated, but still very pleasant and not over commercialised, while inland you have nice hills, without craggy mountains, and a mostly good climate - Seville gets too hot in the summer, and Granada hinterland too chilly in the winter. Airports - Faro is an hour into Portugal and has connections all over Europe and beyond, often at cheap rates too, while Seville airport connects well with Madrid and Barcelona for your international links either to USA or to Eastern Europe etc.

Welcome to the forum. Check any potential places between October and May if you intend to buy. A lot of coastal towns on the atlantic coast are ghost towns in the winter. I went to some villages near Ayamonte a few years ago and they were dead in october. Most places on the med are busy all year.
Granada freezing at night in the winter months, Seville 45 in the summer.

Costa - totally agree with your posting - but we find that one of the charms of the atlantic coast in the low season - calm and tranquillity on the atlantic beaches, and you can still find a good restaurant or two open even in the smallest coastal places. But for us the real charm is in the inland areas.

Hello all
I’m considering moving to Mollina (near Antequera) with my nine year old girl. I think she is too old to go into the spanish education system and I’m looking for international or bilingual school close by. On researching international schools they seem to be near the coast and quite pricey so I’m looking for any recommendations/information on suitable schools. I’m also coming over in July and was wondering if there is a community of British families with young children who get together so my girl can have some fun with. Thank you in advance for any information you may have! Tina

Thanks everyone, I had not considered Huelva. I currently live in a Ukrainian summer resort that is infested with a half-million drunk tourists June-August, and somewhat deserted the other nine months. We much prefer the latter. As long as there are a few year-round bars and cafes within walking distance we are happy. I will check out Huelva.

Thanks again.

By way of an introduction, Huelva and its surroundings. What the history of Huelva City does not say is that it was affected by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, as many of the towns in the area, and particularly the churches and church towers, and many ancient monuments etc, got rattled and fell down - so most significant architecture dates from the 1800s, and the revival of the mining industry got the area going again.
