Toastmaster loses out to laughter

“I didn’t think that everybody would find it so funny”, said a desperately disappointed contestant of the closely fought Humorous Speech contest at Marbella Toastmasters. His hilarious speech entitled “Costa del Sol Driving School” was an inspired observation of how to survive the perils of driving on the Costa and gave an alternative view as to the meaning of various road signs and sign language between drivers. However, the audience laughed so much that the speech overran the allocated time by 20 seconds, meaning instant disqualification.

Learning to communicate effectively within a strict timeframe is just one of the skills learned at Toastmasters and is undeniably important both in business and at social events.

The winning contestants all gave very original and entertaining speeches and in the words of one member of the audience, “made for an absolutely fabulous evening – I haven’t laughed so much in years.”

Local poet and writer, Dawn Stafford’s tongue in cheek tale of having received the Silver Fish award for swimming the English Channel on her 80th birthday and her plans to scale Everest on her 90th had everybody chuckling.

John Ansell amusingly related his experience of eating out in all countries across the globe and the horrors of coming eye to eye with your dish (literally) as an honoured guest in a country where sheep’s eyes are a delicacy.

And Phil Robinson’s humorous speech entitled “All Men are Stupid” had popular appeal with the ladies until the conclusion was reached that maybe men use stupidity to their advantage.

Competition winner, John Ansell and runner up Phil Robinson now go on to represent Marbella Toastmasters at the Regional Toastmaster Competition finals in Rota.
