Should bottom drain and skimmers be open when backwashing?

Yes, and when rinsing. The only time they should be closed is when you are hoovering.

What should and should not be open/closed when backwashing..........Doin' my head in.........soon to be the biggest flower-bed in Spain!

When you are backwashing the bottom drain valve (sumidero) and skimmer valves should be open as well as the valve on the waste pipe if you have one. The hoover point valve can be open or closed, it doesn't matter, but don't leave it open when the pool is normal circulation because it could drag long hair into it.

The positions for rinse are the same. Don't try to turn the multiport valve (the one with six positions) when the motor is running.
