keeping warm

Postby sheilap » Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:48 pm

we are moving out September permanently and would like to start looking for a built in wood burner . we have a fairly big recess in our fireplace, but would like suggestions as to the type of wood burner is the most efficient heard somewhere that it was cast iron that is the best too get. As we are going to get it fitted in we don't want to make an expensive mistake

Get a cast iron one with good draught control. If you choose one with a glass door, get one that has air wash. This keeps the glass cleaner. The size of stove you want will depend on the output you need. How big the space is etc.

They are indeed Costa, but very expensive. I think Clearview were the first to develop the airwash system and charge accordingly, but they have an excellent reputation.

I found the UK pleasantly warm last week, and very cosy inside everywhere :) Different from yesterday in spain. Sat down and left the restaurant before ordering...heated by one of those awful smelly gas heaters. Very unwelcoming.

The gas heaters should not be smelly - if they are burning efficiently !!

Sounds like a risk of CO2 poisoning :-(

Just CO Gus. Thats the lethal one. I used one of those self contained gas heaters on wheels, that you can push to where you want, in my workshop. I was informed by the man from Corgi that I should really have my window open as a safety precaution while I had the heater on. Kind of undermines the point of having the fire in the first place.

There are always a few deaths in spain every winter from these or the water heaters. Usually old people who have placed them in a bedroom They don't seem to sell the alarms here :?

Thanks for all the info we will indeed be looking for a cast iron one. The room we have is fairly large and also open plan to the kitchen and hall, so we are also going to look at storage heaters as a back up. We have one of those mobile heaters at the moment but it does not give out a lot of heat for our space.
Grouser I know what you mean by keeping the window open at the moment we have great drafty windows so don't need to open them, that's the next job on the list for my OH.
He thinks he is going out next year for early retirement so at the moment he has not seen my growing list

You can get a combined carbon monoxide and smoke alarm from Leroy Merlin, about 79 euros......well worth doing, someone I know nearly died from monoxide poisoning from using gas heater in double glazed home out here......

Leroy Merlin also have a leaflet showing quite a range of wood-burning stoves.

Anyone know if it is it possible to buy a wood burner in Spain with a back-boiler?
I have only seen room heaters.

Just my twonpenneths worth...we put in some econoheat radiators the other day amd they work so much better than we thought.

Our living room is about 40m2 but with just 2 of them, its very warm in there.

The bedrooms, which are less well insulated don´t heat as much but aren´t cold either.
