Removing damp smell in wood

Postby Jool » Fri Oct 24, 2008 11:55 am

Well we fixed the damp wall and all is fine there now but.....

The chest of drawers that was against my damp wall now smells of damp and all the clothes inside do so as well of course - it comes out when I wash the clothes but I have tried wiping the wood with bleach to kill the smell several times and it just does not come out, it removes the very faint mould that was there but not the odour so I cannot put fresh clothes back in the drawers.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the lingering damp smell in the wood? It seems to be a chipboard composite heavily compressed but of course absorbent as the smell is only at the back where this cheaper wood is.......

Try bicarbonate of soda mixed with water. removes all smells -puke from fabric etc.
Honestly it works
Also stop pi55ing in the drawers

Think the bicarb suggestion is best, dont think fridge fresh would work, rather hard to get that sort of thing here, needs more intensive care. Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

take the unit outside, take the drawers out, leave it out in the sun or under the car port for a week, the smell will go

Tried the bicarb twice over, smell still there but not as strong, drawers and unit are now out on the covered porch but as its so wet don´t know if it will just have fresh rain smell it absorbs as opposed to old damp!!!

Thanks for all the answers.
