Postby Julie » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:53 am

Hi

We are having a new kitchen fitted and we are having granite worktops, my question is, does anyone have them with the drains cut into the granite, ours at the moment is SS , but i was wanted to have the drain cut into the granite this time, would the water marks become awfull after time, anyone got the drains cut in ? It just crossed my mind, and as they want to fit next week, i thought I would ask Thanks :)

We had a new kitchen about 18 months ago and had silestone worktops. We had the drain grooves cut both sides of the sink and they have been fine. I have one of those soft mats on one side which tends to hold water underneath it, but does stop breakages!! and sometimes I have to use a bit of calc remover. The side that doesn't hold the water has never been a problem.

Same as previous reply, no problems with discolouration or wear, but be careful when putting things down as they can sometimes slip when wet. We found that on previous granite and silstone surfaces, rubber anti slip mats and plastic drainers tended to dicolour the surface. The cut grooves are the best.

I have black gloss silestone worktops with the drain grooves, sometimes the grooves get a little white but a slight scrub soon gets it off.I have a metal dish drainer that sits on the top of the slots and havent had any probs ,been fitted for nearly 1.5 years :D

If you are having a new kitchen why don't you have a Spanish style dish drainer? These are put in the cupboard over the sink and have a tray where the water drains. If you don't use a dishwasher you can put your dishes there out of view to dry.

I already have the drainer fixed over the sink, but I also find that I use other dishes that end up on the drainer, pans etc :)

Talking about the drainers in cupboards, we also have one after the kitchen company FORGOT to add the drainer lines in the granite and once its fitted its way too late. Trouble is the cupboard does not have the bottom off for it to air properly and so we have to keep the door open 24/7 so that the cupboard doesnt blow with the damp...any suggestions for this?

Couldn't you take the top off the cupboard?

Nope, there is another cupboard above it.

I was thinking about maybe taking the bottom off but was told it could affect the structure of the cupboard?

Just put one bar across the bottom for support.
