Any tips on how to rid pool of suntan lotion scum oil slick?

Postby Bongtrees » Tue Aug 05, 2014 3:10 pm

Despite informing guests to remove suntan lotions etc before getting in pool, the last guests have left it in a right mess.

Any tips on how to rid stuff from pool would be much appreciated.

shock it with cloro granos :)
My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.

Chlorine will not help. It is an oily scum that sticks to the pool wall at the surface - chlorine does not dissolve oil.

A cloth with detergent or cleaning alcohol on it should remove it. Any floating on the surface should go through the skimmers and be removed by the filter.

Hard work I'm afraid. I scrub the freeboard with Bayrol Bordnet and leave the skimmers running all night with new tablets.
It is very difficult to ask people not to go into the pool without protection. My Grandchildren are always fully covered before they go in.

Shower before going in. Slap on the screen when you get out. Anything else is an insult to the pool owner and ought not be tolerated.

I agree. On the odd occasion that my attempts to discourage visitors is unsuccessful one of the rules of engagement is that there is no way they get anywhere near the pool without showering first.

Disagree totally.
You can't expect children to be playing in the pool all afternoon in boats etc and generally having fun, without adequate protection. I don't take it as an insult I just get on with fixing it, and I keep a exceptionally clean pool.

Surely after a minute or two in the pool, not to mention a whole afternoon, any suntan cream will have been as efficiently washed off as thirty seconds under the shower except that the resultant mess will be left floating on the surface of the pool and clinging to the waterline instead of being flushed away down the shower drain.

I would have though that a far more efficient method of protecting children from the effects of the sun would be the use of all over UV Protective swimsuits such as these:

Showering doesn't remove most sun tan products. I have to wear protective on my legs as am allergic to pool products and get blotchy skin. We used to buy something from the pool shop and was applied direct to a sponge and removed the scum from the sides of the pool immediately. Pools are for enjoyment 8)

Don't bother cleaning it. Just tell the next guests that Spain is a filthy country and that's part of the "charm" & appeal. If they don't believe you, tell them to go the beach and see the scum floating on the water there. They'll soon hightail it back to your pool. :lolno:

(edit: I see the OP is in Valencia, maybe my sarcastic comment only applies to Andalucia/certain highly populated areas of areas of the CDS)

On a serious note though, doesn't floculante help with this problem?

Our nearest neighbours came out to their holiday home last year with 3 grandchildren. After two weeks to sides of the pool were coated in a thick film of suncream.

This year they bought some special stuff for the kids. It was called "Calypso Once a Day", she commented that it was similar to "Riemann P20" that they sell at the Airport. It's a gel that you put on once a day and don't need to top up.

It must work as the pool was clean after two weeks and the kids weren't sunburned!

We tried the Reimann P20, didn´t get sunburnt but the clothes got stained badly from it!

I'm barred from using P20 because of the staining.

The only official pool product that will have any effect on pool 'oil' film would be Algaecide since it contains a surfactant as well as an alcohol.

An unofficial product that could do the job would be something like Cilit Bang, Grime and lime, since this is an acidic Surfactant with low frothing surface tension reducing properties to help solute the oil. If you try this ...little and often until the film is removed. spraying the surface on a calm day

DO NOT use Fairy or liquid soap unless you want a foam pool party !
