Any recommendations for builder?

Hi all,

We used a fantastic builder 10+ years ago when we first bought our house in Spain, but he has since moved back to the UK. We now want to do some more work and wondered how to find a decent builder again. We have been ripped off before and need a good lasting job to be done, plus we have basic Spanish so translating is not easy. (but thanks for the great thread on building terms in Spanish!)

Has anyone used someone in the Comares/Colmenar/Riogordo area who they could recommend - do private message me if you prefer.

I think Barry is saying that more than one recommendation would be better than just one, who could be his cousin.

so what's wrong with recommending a cousin if that cousin is a good builder ... thought it was the quality which was important not the kinship! ... anyway Chris is not my cousin ... and he is a very good builder!

Chris may be good but there are a lot of cowboys about, unfortunately. In the UK I would be looking for several recommendations and looking at several jobs they have done before handing over money to anyone. No different here in Spain.

Yes hubby and son..but guess that's not allowed as they may be cowboys..so which cowboys survived in the uk for 30+ yrs? The man asked for a recommendation ..sorry someone jumped to help..ok you all have your opinion but hey this is Spain and if we can't trust people on here then what hope is there! oh and by the way if my grammar is incorrect then so what...Im not a snob.

Thanks again for all your suggestions, and just so you are aware, I am experienced and sensible enough to ask builders for references, to go and see a variety of recent work the builders have undertaken, and generally ask around to get points of view.
I certainly would not instruct a builder based on one forum recommendation, but sometimes getting the initial introductions means we have a starting point.... That's the usefulness of having forums and sharing information, so once again thanks for the constructive responses.
