IKEA kitchen

Postby flyeogh » Tue Dec 29, 2015 6:14 pm

Hi all. Just been to IKEA and had a look at their metod kitchens. While many had nice hinge action and soft close they all seemed to have been very badly installed. Those that had traditional double door cabinets all had a gap between the two doors. Those without a vertical support bar had clear daylight into the cabinet between the doors. Smells and dust would enter with ease.

Just wondered if anyone here had an IKEA kitchen and had noticed (or not) this issue?

I like the price and as said some features but gaps between doors is a no-no for me. Maybe they don't have professional fitters for the shop  Much appreciate any thoughts.

ps: The IKEA was in Jerez and next door was a plant centre. Incredible discounts on large pots, and some very good quality plants. Couldn't resist a lime tree; always wanted one. And delivery Jerez to Puerto de Santa Maria, 30 kilometers, 13 Euros I thought was very fair as some of the pots two of us couldn't lift :D

I have planned, built and fitted two Ikea kitchens and they have been fine. I think the units in the shops are put together very quickly and aren't done very well. All the doors adjust to fit properly, it sometimes just takes a while to get everything fitting OK although having said that, nearly all my cupboards and drawers on the last kitchen fitted straight away. It's important to get the base units level on their adjustable feet before putting the doors on otherwise they'll never sit square. Putting the doors on is the last job I do after the units and worktop are in place.

I am rather keen on putting together Ikea stuff .... which I think is quite unusual. Having withdrawal symptoms recently we went and bought a chest of drawers. The one in the shop was wobbly and the drawers wouldn't shut very well but the one we put together is perfectly good. I think they do leave out some of the supports or nails in the back panels in the display ones which are vital to hold it all together.

I wouldn't hesitate in building another Ikea kitchen.

Wicksey many thanks for such a comprehensive reply. And thank you Olive for showing an IKEA-installerholic is not alone

I'm fairly certain I'll never get withdrawal symptoms regarding installing a kitchen, or painting, or laying a floor, or .............

On that info if the one specialist doing me a quote comes out too expensive (and I think they will) I think I'll go for an IKEA as the prices do seem keen.

Cheers

i was appalled at the quote we were given .... over 6k just for the fitted kitchen and that didn't include all the drawers and carousels that I wanted (nor the prep, and tiling etc afterwards).

In the end we did everything ourselves stripping out the old kitchen and taking the walls back to the bricks, and knocking down a wall and channeling out for the electrics. We did pay to have a new tiled floor and partially tiled walls, replastering of the walls, some minor electrics and cutting and fitting the worktop. The whole job cost us about 3.500 euros in the end (that was 4 years ago). Must say I really enjoyed it and still appreciate my kitchen!

I got several quotes and to be honest when I went to a fitted kitchen supplier it was just as cheap. Of course had I installef it myself that would be different. Very different as with my skills it would have ended in tears, injury and divorce. You have to bear in mind that ours is a campo house with no right angles and "odd" bits of walls and columns here and there.

Having said that I was very impressed with the ikea kitchen planners. We did all the planning work in Milton keynes and just asked malaga to quote.

For anyone else interested in doing it themselves, the online planner is very good and easy to use. I don't know if they have changed the format in recent years, but I could at any time get a list of all the components and a total price for it which was very useful.

I did all ours at home then when I went to the store in Malaga I gave the girl in the kitchen department my customer number and she accessed the whole plan in the shop on their computer. She then double checked I had done it all correctly, and I added in a couple of extra bits I couldn't do online and they printed out the whole thing there and then. It only took about 15 minutes to do.

As you say, if you then have to pay someone to fit it all it may not work out so cheaply.

We used the Ikea fitting service which was pretty reasonable in cost. They did a good job of the fitting so happy with our choice. We went to Ikea in Glasgow who did the plans for us, we then sent the plans online to Ikea Malaga. IKEA Malaga arranged for a site inspection with one of their staff and one of their fitting contractors. This was very useful as they had some great suggestions on how to improve our plans. This was charged but refunded on purchase, well worth it. Very happy with the service. Our new kitchen looks braw!
