Fibreglass repair?

Postby rafiki » Sun Sep 11, 2016 8:40 am

The photo shows the top of my roof tent which resembles a luggage roof box. I damaged it a while ago and have had it protected with grey tape until now. I'd like to do a repair but am unsure what to use and being mechanically challenged need it to be as simple as possible! The patterning around the crack is just the leftover adhesive when I removed the fabric-like grey tape, the usual surface is smooth. It would be quite a job to work the repair from inside and outside as the tent interior has an insulated lining so I'm wondering what could be used to effect a waterproof repair just from the exterior?

Brian, simplest and none techie fix is to buy a small tin of clear Gel coat and the hardener, basically the clear resin you'd use when fibre glassing, and apply it to the crack. It will be impermeable and not too bad to look at when cured, and the repair will last forever.

If it were a more important job, ie on a car wing you'd grind the crack out first then fill and gel coat. Not needed here I think for simple weather proofing purposes.

Brian, do you have a little dremel/dremel type gadget there? If so just opening that crack up a touch before applying the gelcoat/filler would make for a neater job.

A tiny artists brush loaded with the resin will fill the crack like a dream then Brian.

If you buy your Gel coat from a Boat yard or Chandlers you will be able to buy a white gel coat to match, in very small repair quantities rather than buying a full tub.

i found a tube of fibreglass for repairing such things in bauhaus (not with the boat stuff, that was 40€ !!) but with the glues etc. It fixed my water tank perfect, only took a couple of minutes.
