Hi everyone, I have asked my builder to install the square terracotta terrace type barro tiles on my stairs (the curved edge ones are too expensive) I was wondering if these can be varnished otherwise they will become ingrained in dirt.....I don't want them to lose their character so ideally something that will seal them for cleaning but not radically change the look! possible?! Thanks in advance.
ps just to clarify they are the ones you see everywhere in Andalusia, cost about 40 cents per 'tile'
Terrace 'Barro' tiles
Re: Terrace 'Barro' tiles
We used a water sealant on our outside terracotta tiles from Bricomart which has helped to repel stains. It's called Hidrofugante Incoloro and is very watery and just soaks into the tile.
On the tiles inside in the conservatory I bought something from the ferrateria (Protector) which I put on in 3 thin coats. It doesn't make them shiny but does seem to repel most spillages. I just asked for tile sealant.

fantastic, thanks for that!
Re: Terrace 'Barro' tiles
We sealed the ones in our bathroom with Aceite de Mora which is very effective and only richens the colour a little. The downside is the smell, which lingers for a couple of days. In the kitchen we rubbed them with three coats of Briwax, mixing clear and brown. This looked lovely but after ten years they need re-waxing. I suggest you try a sample area first, in a corner or under furniture, as the effect can vary. If the floor is the least bit damp, as one of ours was, the result looked like old, antique, weathered tiles which suited this old room but perhaps not to everyone's taste. Specialist paint shops often have a selection of sealants on offer and can give advice.
