Hi everyone
We have a mixture of single/double glazed upvc windows of various ages/state of repair in our Spanish house, so have decided to update the downstairs windows for now. We have received a favourable quote from a local window installer but I just wondered if any of you had some advice of do's and dont's or what to be aware of when making a purchase of new windows.
Thanks

Re: Double glazing advice
Aluminium windows are much cheaper than PVC. The proven thermal barrier of PVC is much less beneficial in the Spanish climate and condensation on the frames is very rare.
When we built our house the windows were made and fitted by a local "aluminium carpenter" as they are called. We had 20 windows/doors totalling 70m2 at a total cost (including Climalit double glazed glass panels) of €9000. That was 13 years ago, but it should give you an idea on price.

Our house is 17 years old and every window and door is white aluminium from new.
Re: Double glazing advice
uPVC definitly the better choice. Do they cost more? Yes. Are they worth the difference? Yes, every penny and more. The comfort you gain, can't be paid in money. If you want to save money, go for aluminium, but don't expect anything comparable.
- In uPVC you can get 3 different qualities: $--t, good, superior. Anything you usually find is "good" and the differences between a cheaper and a more expensive quote could be caused through the used hardware and the glazing (spanish "double glazing" is not automatic "low-Energy" glazing and if you request or get offered gas-filled glazing, not only the quality is increased, but as well the cost).
- In aluminium you can get like 10 different qualities and there are substantial differences between the "$--t" and the "superior" and you should know that the from medium quality the aluminium will be more expensive than a superior uPVC window.
You pay for what you get.
