dehumidifier

Postby ashtondav » Mon Mar 05, 2018 7:47 pm

I HATE A/C. But I was wondering, would a dehumidifier make life cooler in the bedroom. I know it does nothing to alter air temperature but dry atmosphere makes sweat evaporation better, and hence "feel" cooler. It's not a big issue as we go to the UK in July and August. I do recall renting a place in barbados once and it had dehumidiers and it did seem to help.

Ideas?

I think they are more relevant in tropical climates where humidity is very high. In Spain, in summer, humidity is relatively low so the benefit will be marginal. Sweat evaporation is important which is why fans work so well, without reducing air temperatures.

I don’t know why you hate AC, as used sensibly it is the best solution. You can run it as a dehumidifier or as a fan as well as cooling. It’s a very versatile device.

Last summer we had day after day of humidity in the 80s and 90, and even now the aircon used as heating fills a 5 litre bottle in two or three days.

It’s usually about 55% or 60% here for July and August. August tends to be at the higher end.

A fan does help you keep cool, by speeding up evaporation.
Moving air also prevents mozzies from biting.
