Time frame for seeding grass

Postby Davidbid » Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:43 pm

Hi every one -I am new here in Estepona and have lots of bare patches in rhe grass that has been caused by caterpillars eating it!
I have grass seed but would like to know if it will germinate at this time of year. Even though times may be better, I just need to know if I am wasting time and money by seeding now at end Nov start Dec.

No chance now, the ground is too cold. You will have to wait until late March or April.

I think i would give it a go anyway provided the seed not too expensive.
As far as i can figure planting season in Spain for grain is Sept/Oct.
It seems to me that these seed germinate and start to grow.
Then when the weather gets colder lie more or less dormant for couple of Months.
Then when the weather warms in Spring these crops already started and will
mature in a few Months, grain crops harvested in Spain around June before real
heat. When i was over last Month i seem fresh planted fields.
I am guessing same for grass, if seed not expensive not much to lose.
I not know if wet will rot seed, if you leave to Spring moisture may be scarce.
Sid has more experience of Spain than I but this is what i have noticed.

Hi guys
Thanks for your replies - I did put some areas of seed down before I went away for a few weeks and it has germinated! Although not every where.
I think some areas get more sun than others, since germinating though it doesn't seem to have grown much. Probably too cold overall.
