?instead of a vine?

what climbing plant/s could I grow over the patio to give summer shade instead of a vine? the patio faces south and gets hit by very strong winds periodically ... any suggestions welcome ... many thanks

Try a Pink Trumpet Vine (Podranea Ricasoliana). It's not actually a vine but it grows very fast and will cover a pergola in 2 years.

Jasmine or honeysuckle we have both here and are they doing well, we are also growing a wisteria which is looking good.

Calabaza...the ornamentle kind (squash..I think) plants make good shade for summer... 8)

I find Jasmine & Honeysuckle, as good as they are in other respects (i.e. scented, (mostly) evergreen, dense etc) are difficult to prune and can be prolific.

Wisteria, on the other hand, is easily managed, flowers several times each year and can be pruned (according to the "rules") easily and only twice per year.

The choice, as they say, is yours.

many thanks for the interesting selection of suggestions ... as the weather seems to have turned autumnal ... ?these can be planted now? (maybe not the calabaza?

Might I suggest a passion flower. There are numerous choices, all excellent climbers. We have about 10 varieties and the best is a Passiflora that has thick waxy leaves and huge flowers. Grows for 12 months of the year[Pasiaflora Belotti]
