Re: plants that like full sun
Gill, what were the plants that died?
Most of the plants you buy in Spain can survive full sun, it is much more difficult to find decent shade loving plants.
Geraniums of all types love full sun. Roses do as well.

Re: plants that like full sun
Are we talking about big plants and shrubs or small plants??
Looking nice in my garden at the moment and flowering are Duranta (2 mauve varieties and 1 white), Abelia, Bouganvillea, Hibiscus, Solanum (has flowered all summer), Jasmines, Campsis Radicans, Geraniums, Lantana Gazania and Lobelia. It has been too hot for the roses but they are just starting to throw out buds again. Escallonia looking very healthy and growing fast, hoping it will flower again now the weather is cooling.
These are all in a campo garden in full sun.
I have also had a few disasters I might add!!
I bought some goldcrest fir trees and put in pots, not really expecting them to survive but they love it and growing fast. I thought they migh go brown in the heat but look really healthy.
It would be interesting to hear what other people have got that looks good at the moment.

For bedding, I find Petunias and Vincas to be completely sunproof and both will self set like mad!

We lost two types of lavender, miniture rose bush, Jasmine and a couple of peppers.El Cid wrote:Gill, what were the plants that died?

Based on the posts above we shouldn't have lost them. Wodering if our watering is to blame. We haven't been watering every day, but when we do we tend to drench them. OH going to install an irrigation system this week to make things more regular and hope that helps.
We will try some of the suggestions mentioned.
Thanks

Well, if they don't get enough water they will surely die!Campo Gill wrote:

None of the plants you mention should have been a problem with the sun but they do not like to dry out.
If they are in pots then it is even worse. Every part of our garden is irrigated every day - luckily it is automatic but some of the pots on the terrace need manual watering. Miss just one day and they are in trouble.

Re: plants that like full sun
thanks sid...that will be it!!! had daughters wedding here and lots of friends here, so did miss the odd day!! our soil is crap..a lot of slate. if i dig a deep enough hole (if i can break through the soil) and put compost in, will they eventually take root? off to buy irrigation tubing today.
Re: plants that like full sun
Even with an irrigation system you have to keep checking pipes don't get blocked etc. We lost a bottlebrush this summer when the pipe to it got blocked and I didn't notice.

Re: plants that like full sun
I have quite a few white Datura plants that seem to thrive in full sun. I also have a fabulous purple variety with a black stem and is about 4 mtrs high. Talking of high; here are few facts about the Datura:•
Ingesting datura seeds was part of a rite of passage for young Huichol men. They returned from the delerium with no memory of their mother, as if "born into manhood with a blank slate."
• Datura plants have been studied for their utility in bioremediation projects. They help to absorb heavy metals polluting groundsoil.
• The dried leaves of Datura were once smoked to combat symptoms of asthma
• Datura preparations were once used to moderate opium addiction
• Datura has been identified as an antipoison remedy for organophosphate, nerve gas, and pufferfish exposure
• Native Americans once rubbed Datura on horses they didn't want to wander off !!

Re: plants that like full sun
is it called datura in spain too??? rying to fin lobelia as other post mentioned...no luck in 3 garden centrs so far!! petunias still alive!!!! maybe the irrigation does work!!!!
Re: plants that like full sun
They are also called brugmansia and they are all extremely poisonous! We had them in our garden hanging over the wall by the pool but have taken them all out. They are stunning to look at but make a terrible mess constantly dropping leaves and flowers and we were worried about the dogs.
Any poisonous plants that I grow are well away from where the animals go.
