Hi,
Should I cut back on these plants over the winter and if so when is best time and how ruthless should I cut them?

Prune them to shape - no more.
They will come back after heavy pruning but it is best avoided unless space is a problem.

We prune quite heavily each year with no problem.

Mad Mary prunes ours down to about 3 ft every January. Funny enough a friend in the states was asking about it this week so I took some photo's and measured it's height, it's over 12 ft and has hardly been out of flower all summer.

Do be careful when you are pruning - the sap is poisonous (although not as lethal as oleander) and you should wear strong rubber gloves and make sure you wash thoroughly before you have that coffee and dunk a digestive!
