Another - What is this climbing plant

Postby Martin Page » Sun Mar 21, 2010 4:21 pm

Another what is this..

Ive just bought from a nursery a vine like climber that has a very large seed, not unlike a wrinkled pear to look at, light yellow/green and very firm.
It grows with dark green arrow shaped leaves with spiral tendrills for climbing
Id post a picture, but i dont know how.

Any ideas ? The guy refered to it as a chiorchi or creorchie or something like ...but I cant find it in any reference book. Its certainly a talking point !

It looks a little like an ornamental gourd ( buffalo gourd or similar) - some members of that family have ivy shaped leaves. Gourds have climbing tendrils.

Hi Martin,
Do a Google search ......."buffalo gourd" and select images..........

Not the climber you really wanted ?
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Nope - I dont think so. Its not as large as that and its not as green. The leaves are also wrong.
Its only as big as a mans fist and quite hard ....

It looks like some sort of fruit by its leaves. Not unlike melon, courgette or egg plant leaves

That was interesting Martin - I thought it was some sort of fruit. Can't say I have ever seen one.

Weird looking fruit isn't it ?
That's why I thought it was a gourd of some sort - I hit on the right family, wrong genus, must try harder  .
