Flowering plants for wall pots

Postby peteroldracer » Mon May 05, 2014 7:41 pm

Any suggestions for those pots hung on walls you see here? Ours will be in full sun, and we have geraniums in our borders, so something that spills over the pot, with bright colours would be good. There is nothing in La Palma or the other garden centre near Trapiche, so any other local places worth a look would be useful!
We have the pots and the compost, just need the growing thingies.

For me you cannot beat trailing geraniums for wall pots. My favorite garden centre is Vireros amberes on the road betwwen torrox and nerja opposite the boat yard. Wonderful plants

Google the Cordoba patios that should give you lots of ideas, on at the moment, well worth the day up there to see them.

Try Potulacas. Very cheap and colourful and happy in wall pots. We do them every year. Watering isn't critical as they are succulents and they go on for the whole year and no dead-heading unlike geraniums.

The flowers open in the sun/heat and are multicoloured.

We love them.

My word I think he's got it!!
They sound like the things we had last year, but have been unable to identify or find locally. Where do you get them from Sid? Do you grow them from seed or buy them ready to go?

We buy them every year in our local Viveros. Dirt cheap, about 60c for a small one. They are starting to be available about now. They may not have many flowers on them when you buy them but they very quickly flower and double or treble In size.

Sid, just Googled them and they are exactly what I want, too! There's a lovely potulaca growing wild at the end of our street, it's great to know the name.

I found some yesterday...the A1 Garden Centre at Valleniza has them. 1.85€ each in those plastic hanging pots, lookinh healthy but yet to start flowering.
Valleniza is on the coast road west of Torre del Mar (come off the A7 at the Iznate exit and head east alongside the sea) and take some money, as their choice of all things growing is wide and tempting!

They may even survive the winter and grow again in the spring. We have a couple like that, but they are so cheap it's easier to buy new ones every year.

We have an Andalucian painted fountain in our courtyard which originally was filled with water, but eventually we decided that dead wasps didn't improve its looks and we now plant it out on both levels with flowers. In November the Portulacas are replaced with Pansies and in a few weeks time they will be replaced with Portulacas. Twelve months of fabulous colour for about €20 a year!

I don't know why, but your "filling with pansies" put me in mind of that advert, where a strange guy invites a guest to dance naked round his fountain....
