How much for a new pool?

Postby Jenny1960 » Fri Jan 09, 2015 5:57 pm

Approximately 11m x 5m and about 2m deep all over. We have all our own tiles. There is an old pool there at the moment (at the side of villa) so,they won't have to cart all the earth away. Does anyone have an approximate idea of what it would cost please?
We are having a major reform done to the villa at the moment by spanish builders who we are very pleased with and are waiting for them to get back to us with a quote- the boss said approximately around 20,000 euros. Does this seem fair?

Thank you in advance

It sounds about right bearing in mind they haven't got to dig it out.

It also depends on the construction method. Ours was built of 30cm reinforced concrete like our deposito. Sprayed concrete might be cheaper but avoid block construction.

I doubt you would find a significantly cheaper quote. Make sure it is on your building licence.

Thanks for your reply Sid. Can I ask why you say to avoid block construction?

Ps Sid, they do have to dig it out as it will be a brand new pool and then, chuck all the earth into the original pool..

Block construction is very weak and prone to cracking due to the movement of the earth. Mine was built with concrete projected under high pressure (Gunite) into a latticework of iron rods:

A lot of people do not appreciate how heavy water is, and just hiw much pressure it puts on the walls of a pool. A normal 8x4 metre pool will have around 50 cubic metres if water in. Metric is so easy...a litre of water weighs a kilo, so that makes the pool 50 tonnes of water. As others have said, you need heavily reinforced concrete to keep it square and safe for many years.

This is also the reason why even a properly constructed pool should never be left empty. The pressure of the water in the pool compensates for the pressure and movement of the earth around it.

When you say you have all your own tiles, do you mean for the terrace or the pool itself?

As for the "old" pool, if it were me I would make it watertight and cover with beams and concrete. You can never have too much water here in Spain. The carting away of the excavated stuff isn't that expensive a job especially if it is just soil/sub soil. Even if the old pool is the same size as the new, they won't get all of it in the old.
