Bordeaux Mixture

Postby SikeandKari » Mon May 04, 2015 8:56 pm

Hi. We are very new at this so please forgive us for asking questions which may be obvious. We understand that Bordeaux mixture is used as a fungicide on fruit trees, vines and tomatoes but at least in the UK you can't get it any more. Can you get it in Spain or is there an alternative? Ta for any advice.

If you are talking 'Powdery Mildew' Oidio in Spanish, their are fungicides available. Most garden centres will be able to help you. Take along an example of what your problem is (Horticultural)!

You cant get Bordeaux mixture in Spain. Nor can you get Copper sulphate to make your own. ( you can get copper sulphate from the pool supplier's, BUT note .. its buffered with Chlorine)

You can get a copper based fungicide (a sort of boosted Bordeaux mixture) from the more specialised agricultural suppliers but this is soon going to be regulated, along with pesticides, that will require a permit. So if you can get it get a large bag to last you.

You can also freely use a sulphur type product that you will need a 'shaker' to apply. This is used mainly for curbits ... melon's. cucumbers, squashes etc

Thanks for the information. I have found a supplier of a copper oxide based product which I think is the 'boosted' Bordeaux mixture and if it works I'll be a large bag before the new controls come in. Thanks for the help.

Copper Oxide is insoluble and will only settle onto the foliage ( which is fine if it doesn't rain or you have too much Dew).
Coppersulphate is soluble and is taken up by the plant in concentrations so low as to have no effect on humans but most toxic to fungural attack, so is far more effective

Alternative use flowers of sulphur from a hand shaker (much cheaper)
