Re: Sowing a lawn
I laid a turf lawn 5 years ago. It's now fully established and needs little water. I bought the turf from a turf farm near Antequera.

Re: Sowing a lawn
I sowed a 70m2 lawn about 13 years ago. It looks fine. I used a mixture of English grass and expensive Bermuda grass.
It's too late to sow now, but turf could be an option (it wasn't 13 years ago).
Contrary to ajtg1952's experience - it takes a huge amount of water, about 1000 litres a day in summer, but luckily we are on an agricultural supply.

Re: Sowing a lawn
It was Grass Europa that we got our grass from. It was Bermudan and drought tolerant. I do'nt have the luxury of a lot of water so it gets some occasionally. It gets brown in the summer but greens up nicely after the first October rain and stays green right through to May.

Re: Sowing a lawn
Laying a lawn at this time of the year is flying in the face of nature , not to mention the cost of the water alone for irrigation.
Don't fight Nature , leave it till October when it cools down a bit and rain is imminent , Grass doesn't grow when it too hot

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Re: Sowing a lawn
"You admit to watering it" - you sound surprised.
Why on earth would you lay a decorative lawn and not water it?
You might as well lay brown concrete.
The OP wants "a real grass lawn" - not a load of green (or brown) weeds around some olive trees.
If you can't look after a lawn don't have one - simple!

Re: Sowing a lawn
How good does the soil need to be. Ours seems to me pretty poor although weeds grow well but itgoes like concrete in the summer
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!

Re: Sowing a lawn
Obviously the better the soil, the better the lawn.
It needs to be well draining otherwise the roots will not get enough water. Any nutrition it needs will be provided by chemical fertilizers and it needs a lot of that to produce a decent green lawn.
Anything you can do to improve it before sowing/laying will help.
