Plant pest/parasite

Postby Nimrod » Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:49 pm

I have a shrub,I don't know what it's called(our gardener here calls it the weed!) which has purpley blue small trumpet flowers which last a day and new ones flower next morning.
It has an infection of little brown hard shell things about as big as half an apple pip. When I remove them some have a liquid content others a white powder.Ants climb up the stems to them. When removed there is a dry brown patch on the leaf as if sap has been sucked out
Any idea what they are and how to prevent them in future

They are some form of scaly cochinella. Sadly, very common. The ants love them as they secrete a sugary substance.

I would use a strong insecticide as they are difficult to control. I use one called Chas 48 or Cuspide 48. Chemical name Chlorpirifos or find a branded (expensive) version recommended for Cochinella.

Thank you Sid....I 've just spent a few hours picking them off.
I'll get the pesticide and await their return
Thanks again
