A large plastic greenhouse near me is full of these:-
Flowers have appeared on some of them during the last couple of days.
a closer view:-
I'm sure they aren't grown for their decorative appearance but what are they and what are they used for?
Cheers

They look like they might be some kind of Aloe - maybe for cosmetics industry ?

I'm no expert but they look like dragon fruit. They seem to be trendy at the moment.

Hi Bob
Perhaps you are right.
Although Google images of the plant show a large central stem and leaves coming of it.
These just seem to be single leaves coming out of the ground.
Perhaps it is because they are new plants?
Cheers

Re: What are these cacti?
Could well be cuttings rooting. Are they not the same as the taller flowering plants behind them?
The garden center on the main road before you get to la Palma has lorryloads of them. Saw a few in Amberos in Torrox also. Would have bought a couple to add to my new fruit garden
but unfortunately we were in the Smart amd these ones were quite big.

Yes I believe the cuttings are off the taller plants.
But the taller plants are just longer versions of the cuttings. No central trunk.
Next time I'm near La Palma I'll pop in and have a look.
Perhaps they are just growing them to take cuttings and then sell on the cuttings once they have rooted?
They don't seem to have room in there to grow more plants.
Cheers

Re: What are these cacti?
I think that the garden center that had loads of them is called Canarias. As you head towards la Palma its on the left hand side. You have to go to the roundabout, all the way round and head back towards the motorway to get in there. Huge place, you can't miss it.
Haven't seen them in la Palma so far.

Re: What are these cacti?
interesting, they could be dragon fruit, but google seems to think they need to be in the sun?
I´ve got a couple of big (one is nearly 1.5m tall) cacti, and they seem to be like a much thicker single stem, much like the small ones in the picture jerry? I´ve seen the ones that I have in the garden centre here in Alhaurin called viveros guzman - mine are like the ones seen on the right in picture 5 of their cacti section. could it be small ones of these ?

Re: What are these cacti?
The polythene sheeting has been removed from the roof of the greenhouse and quite a few of the plants are now in flower.
Where the flowers are dying back I can see the fruit developing.
Definitely dragon fruit.
Cheers
