What to do with the fruit!?

Postby Ricasso » Thu Aug 22, 2019 4:51 pm

I have this little orange tree that my neighbours poison overspray nearly killed. Fortunately, it was only the foliage. I put it in a pot and hoped for the best. I came back to Spain two days ago after 3 months away to find it loaded with little oranges. So much so, the little trunk could bearly take the strain. The tree is about 3 feet tall and about 2 to 3 years old. I understand that you should pick the fruit off for the first couple of years (or something), as soon as they form. I'm guessing it's a bit late for that. Does anybody have any suggestions? Shall I take them off or leave them?

I attempted to add a pic but it won't upload..

Many thanks.

I would leave them at this stage. Usually they shed some of the fruit immediately after they form so those you have should be OK. They may not ripen to full size but they should taste OK. A lot of these recommendations are based on commercial concerns where only the biggest fruit will sell. Just enjoy what you have.

Many tanks El Cid. I've planted 4 other citrus - lemon, lime, mandarin, and orange, of a similar age. Only the Orange and Lemon (or lime) (I can't tell the difference between the lemon and lime though), have fruit. Much less than the one pictured but I will take note of your advice for the future.

Thanks again.

The limes are slightly rounder than the lemons and don't have such pointy ends. When they are ripe they are yellow.

Yes, thanks. I think they're just too young to identify as they're all green. I guess time will tell. Thanks again..

if you want bigger fruit, take half of them off and throw them away.

if you would rather lots of small fruit, for juice etc, then leave it as is.
