Thought you registered your PAYG mobile?

Postby ashtondav on Tue Oct 20, 2009 1:16 pm

Think again.

We regstered our vodafone PAYG mobiles about a year ago when first alerted to the need to register before november this year. Queued up, handed over NIEs, passports etc and went through a thorough registering process.

Thought I still better check that we were registered.

Lucky I did 'cos after waiting 30 minutes, the lovely lady in the vodafone shop told me without a hint of irony: "Oh you registered it before February this year. No that doesn't count. I'll need to do it again."

So don't be surprised if you behaved promptly and you no longer have a mobile when you return to Spain after November 9th.

Doncha loe 'em

Now I'm worried ! We bought a Vodafone PAYG USB modem about 18 months ago - the girl in the shop took all passport details etc, so we assumed it was automatically registered at the time of purchase.

Is there any way to check online if this is registered or not ? We've just come back from Spain and won't be there again til mid December, so it could be a problem :?

I've tried to check on Vodafone.es at various times ovr the past few days, having got a warning message, but that part of the website is out of action.

"Functionality temporarily disabled.
Because we are making improvements to our services, this feature is disabled temporarily."

I have previously registered our mobile and dongle but the message seems to ignore that fact.

Yep, it's definite. The shop said to us today "Registered before February - invalid." had to do it all again.

I hope she's wrong as this could affect thousands

Can anyone else confirm this?

Every time I go to my Vodaphone shop, there is a queue a mile long!

I tried that earlier and got a message in a continuous loop telling my to register my phone. My Spanish is not great, so I'm not sure if everyone who dials 123 gets the same message, or just the people who are recorded by Vodaphone as not being registered.

After half an hour of hearing the same message over & over again I hung up. (I was assuming I was on hold and would eventually be put through to a live person.) I guess, like the shops, they are very busy at the moment!

I did hear on the radio this morning that the phone companies are asking the Government if they can suspend rather than cut people off next Monday, as there are 2 million unregistered phones at the moment. So far the Government have said no. :(

if it´s telling you to register then you are not registered, you have to do it in the shop, not by phone

Vodafone were adamant. If you registered before february the registration was invalid.

if you are getting messages telling you to register, you are not registered (at least for vodafone customers that's the case.)

so has anyone tried to do this onine with any success ? If we'd known, we could have done it last month when we were over - if we can't register online, then we will have to hope it's 'suspension' rather than 'completely cut off', as we won't be back in Spain til mid December

When i registered mine recently she only wanted the mobile number, chip id and my NIE number.
Oh and i also had to sign on the electronic card thingy(what you have to sign when using a card)I was then given a printed form with all the registration details on it.She didnt want to see proof of anything,so maybe it is possible to do it online. :?

I can confirm this is case with Vodafone....I thought my PAYG phone was Ok as I had registered it at Vodafone shop last year...kept getting text messages telling me to register now!! I dis-regarded these, and only when I read on the forum last night...went to Vodafone shop today....YES, you must register again, needed passport and utility bill...maybe different store to store, but then was given a printed contract to sign, store kept 2 copies of the same..

Thanks to original poster of this thread! :D

I must admit I'm a bit confused :?

When we bought our Vodafone PAYG dongle about 18 months/2 years ago, they took all my passport details etc at the time of purchase.

I had assumed that this meant I was registered.

I have never actually gone back & tried to register again.

The dongle is in Spain, and I am in UK, but I have (or thought I had) set up forwarding of text messages to my UK mobile. When we were in Spain in October there were no texts on the dongle telling me to register, and I have not received any messages since my return.

In view of the number of people who say they have had texts telling them to register, does their absence in my case mean that I'm OK ?
Does anyone know if I can check online to see if I am registered ?

I suppose I could try phoning Vodafone, but from UK to a Spanish mobile number is going to be expensive ...... especially if I have to wait for an English speaker to be available (cos I don't think my Spanish will be up to the task  )

I registered my movistar phones in september in a movistar shop in san pedro. She took my NIE details but was uninterested in my passport details and did not look for utility bill.

right BC....whoopee...6 more months to get it right for those that "lose" the number !!!!

El Ministerio del Interior ha cedido a las presiones de los operadores móviles y ha concedido un plazo de seis meses para que los clientes cuyas tarjetas de móvil prepago queden anuladas el lunes puedan identificarse y recuperen así su número de teléfono

The Department of the Interior has yielded to the pressures of the movable operators and has granted a term of six months so that the clients whose cards of movable pre-payment are annulled Monday can identify themselves and reclaim thus their telephone number

A UK mobile works in Spain and roaming charges are lower these days. Why bother trying to understand these bizarre rules in Spain if you are a low user and only want the phone for emergencies or occasional calls and texts.
