ADSL without a landline
ADSL without a landline
One of my neighbours has a Movistar USB modem. The signal received is very poor.
She has complained to Movistar about this and they said they can provide her with ADSL, she doesn't have a landline and there is very little prospect of our small area getting landlines.
This will be on contract at a much higher cost then she now pays.
How does ADSL without a landline work?
I'm guessing it's a router that uses a sim card for reception.
If so, then surely the signal reception can't be any better than using a sim card in a USB modem?
Granted the router might be more sesitive.
Cheers
Gerry

Re: ADSL without a landline
I thought they sometimes used satellite for ADSL where nothing else works.

How does ADSL without a landline work?....I'm guessing it doesn't.........
" Satellite broadband is an option available for those who live in rural areas where traditional fixed-line based broadband services such as ADSL aren't available"
"Short for asymmetric digital subscriber line, ADSL is a type of DSL broadband communications technology used for connecting to the Internet. ADSL allows more data to be sent over existing copper telephone lines "
"This will be on contract at a much higher cost then she now pays."..........if she is into spending money then look at the Satellite options or at least compare.

Hmmm!!
Sid,
Could be via satellite, just trying to find out before she signs an expensive contract.
Enrique
Just as I thought. Perhaps they are misusing the term ADSL.
Cheers

No, I don't think it's a radio based, Wimax, system.
As far as I am aware there aren't any of these systems that cover where we live.

I am using a Vodafone dongle with a Mac in Rincon del la Victoria and its rubbish. I would be interested to hear how your friend gets on Gerry. How much a month?

Re: ADSL without a landline
I know somebody who has a radio based phone/internet fron Telefonica, they appear quite happy with it, it was put in because of where their house is situated, they couldn't put a landline there.
No soporto ver la casa sucia, ahora mismo me levanto y apago la luz.
Re: ADSL without a landline
After several phone calls, and before signing a contract, Movistar have now conceded that my neighbour cannot have ADSL as she doesn't have a landline.

Anyone else go green with envy of the clever folk of Arkholme in Lancs who have installed their own broadband using fibre optical cable - this old boy shown on the news was easily getting download at 540MBS....on a good day I get 2.4!

p.s I like the comment underneath by Penelope P "Cool, we would love that kind of speed we get 16mega doodies in Cumbria"
I wish - but they haven't got the sunshine up there, have they?

Assuming that the OP was interested in broadband really - rather than ADSL specifically - we have used Iberbanda for many years now without problems. It works fine on campo but only if you have direct line of sight to one of their transmitter/receivers.

Re: ADSL without a landline
Yes, I agree fully with that Alpujarran, and our Iberbanda signal is fairly good. For years we had to put up with no internet in the campo and just have a telfonica radio phone. Annoying when the nearest pole is within sight.
My question is, could I run two telephone lines in the same house from a radio phone ?
Further, we have another house on the same plot, could that one also be entitled to a radio phone ?

Re: ADSL without a landline
Anis,
Not sure what you're asking here. Iberbanda has the option of a phone "line" as well as internet access. The additional cost is probably cheaper than a radio phone.

Thanks,
I was not aware of that - I shall look into it.

Re: ADSL without a landline
I have some friends out your way and agreed wireless is not so good but they have just installed a newer lower cost sat system, and if you shoot me a PM I will ask them who installed it.
I beleive that it was only 29 euros per month

Re: ADSL without a landline
A satellite system is the only system that can be used anywhere in Spain, provided you can mount the satellite dish such that it has a clear and uninterrupted view of the sky.
Most seem to use the Tooway satellite system, there are numerous resellers/ installers of this system.
Have a look at http://www.bentley-walker.com/tooway/tooway_home.php for typical prices.
Cheers
