How to watch TV from a memory stick.
How to watch TV from a memory stick.
Because of slow internet I download all TV programmes from Filmon and then connect the laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable.
I have tried putting the programme onto a memory stick and plugging it into the TV but it states that the file is not compatible. The TV guide says the file must be FAT32 but the programme comes from Filmon as MP4.
I've checked on Google but the information on there is very confusing to say the least, can anybody on here guide me through the process of converting MP4 to FAT32 in non tech language.
I'd appreciate any help please.

MP4 is the file type which is the normal file type for video and all TVs should accept that.
FAT32 is entirely different. It is how the data is organised on the storage device. The other alternative is NTFS which is normally used on larger devices such as hard disks. If the memory stick is formatted in NTFS it will not work. You will have to reformat the stick to FAT32 and it should then be OK.
Put the stick in the laptop and go to File Manager. Select the USB stick from the list at the bottom and right click on it. Select Properties. That will show you which file system you have. If it is not FAT32 go back to where you started and select Format after the right click. In the File System box select FAT32. Format the stick. You will lose any data on the stick.

Many old flat screen tv's (over 3-4 yrs) will not play video files of any description from a USB ..... purely mp3 audio files and jpeg

Go to an avi forum. A poster here has an older Samsung. Someone on the avi forum showed how to simulate an upgrade.
If I can find it I'll let you know.

The memory stick I tried was already formatted as Fat32, I tried it in the TV but the machine still states, File Not Supported.
The TV is a Technika LCD 32-56.

Re: How to watch TV from a memory stick.
The manual only states that the external storage device must be FAT32 but it gives no list of supported file types.
It shows that it will play movies from the USB but I think you will find that that only includes AVI files - MP4 came later so it looks like you can't do it without converting the MP4 files to a suitable file type. Snag is, it doesn't tell you what file types are supported.
You can convert from MP4 to AVI - Google "mp4 to avi" and try it.

A quick Google search shows that that TV does indeed play AVI format files.

Was only pointing the other person in the direction of the said manual and that it is available online for him to read through to be sure he's doing it correctly

Yes, thanks for posting the link, but as I said, it doesn't give the acceptable file types.
AVI files can be played by almost anything that accepts external files, but they have now gone out of fashion as they are huge compared to modern MP4 files.

Re: How to watch TV from a memory stick.
My Panasonic TV will play programmes downloaded from Filmon and transferred to a memory stick but it will not play downloads made with my somewhat less than officially approved downloading program. To play these I put the stick into my M8 Android box which has various built in player options the most reliable and format tolerant of which I find to be MX Player.
Maybe this would work for you.

I realise that your TV isn't a Samsung, but someone had a problem with the older model TV not reading a USB stick. Someone posted on a forum what to do to "upgrade" the TV (first response after the query). This won't work in your case but perhaps the forum will help. Here's the problem and the forum address.
