Buy a Bluetooth loudspeaker - they come in all sizes.

Some years ago I bought a Versus tablet so I could learn a little about Android. I also bought a cheap case for it. Really grumbled when I couldn't get any real volume out of it. Then realised the speaker was at the rear... and when I took the case off the volume doubled.

As I don't have a tablet I don't know how their systems work, but is there a volume control in its own software somewhere, like the one on windows computers (on the bottom taskbar there's a volume control icon). The same happened on my laptop and I did some how manage to find an internal system volume control that I could also turn up .... or are tablets completely different?

Tablets and phones have tiny built in speakers and will always produce a low volume. If it was louder, it would affect battery life. The earphone socket can produce higher levels, but even then, Elf and Safety regs can cause that to be limited.

As I said, the only real solution is an external speaker.

There is also the possibility of either wired active external speakers (or bluetooth as already suggested) or an external portable headphone amplifier. There are loads of these on the market that make the output from any portable device much better and louder. Some very cheap and good ones are made by Fiio.
I have one (not a fiio) that I bought originally for my Sansa Fuze+ portable music player but it works very well on my android phone as well.

Unfortunately speakers are not an option because he would be using the tablet to watch a recorded item when I watch my soap! (I can hear the groans from here)
