Portable Air Con units

Postby fincalospinos » Mon Mar 14, 2016 10:54 am

Looking for a quiet portable aircon unit, for a room size approx 450 sq ft. Has anyone got any recommendations on models and where to buy from, Malaga to Nerja.

We tried a portable air con unit some years ago, can't remember the make but didn't find it very effective.
I've seen them on sale at many car boots for around 20-30 euros, but personally I would recommend having a permanent unit fitted ,if possible...
The price of the permanent units have come down dramatically, we have them in most of our rooms, but to be honest we use them more for heating rather than cooling.
Ceiling fans seem to be more effective and cheaper to run !

I agree that portable aircon units are not very effective. The big problem with them is that you need an external outlet for the flexible tube which takes away the extracted heat. We used to hang it out of a partially open window which rather defeats the whole exercise. We eventually dumped it for proper fitted units.

The other problem with portable units is that if the machine pumps hot air out of a window, it can only do this by sucking the air you have just cooled out of the room! This has to be replenished, and so in comes warmer air, from somewhere, to make up for it! Not exactly an efficient arrangement.

Some time ago I did buy one of these units in Leroy M, and use it in my workshop. It has been modified to have an additional flexi-duct hose, which brings air in from outside - instead of sucking my just-cooled air away. So not really portable any more, but a darned sight more efficient.

Posts above are right though: you're better off with a proper split system.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I know the split systems are better, but I only need this for a temporary property whilst my main house is being reformed.

Maybe just worth seeing if you can get hold of a second hand unit then.
