You need to register. All they need is an email address and password. That has been an option for some time on the other devices (tablets etc). No, on the TV, you have to go to the website they give you, sign in and enter the one time code.

Would an e-mail address in the UK be a helpful thing to use?
Would anything be sent to it, which would require reading/actioning in order to continue?
Trying to be circumspect here...

I've been registered with the BBC for years and I've never been sent anything from them. Both Channel 4 and ITV have required registration for years so with any luck, this is nothing more than them tailoring their service to you.
For the new functions to work properly, you do need to be signed in.

The BBC asks for a postcode. I'm not sure how I would get round that one, not owning any property in the UK!

So which are they asking for now, as part of registration - postcode or email address?

They do not ask for a postcode, just email and password. If you did need to enter a postcode just use any one you choose - that's what I did for ITV Player.

Wasn't aware that you could have an "e-mail address in the UK" or any other country.
I thought an e-mail address was not geo located in any way?
I have several e-mail address's and can't remember specifying a country when I set them up.

SFAIK, and checking Google yesterday, e-mail addresses can reveal their geolocation by opening up the e-mail's 'properties', which will (iirc) often reveal the sender's IP address, which is geolocated.
I may have all this wrong, of course.

What I was wondering was whether you could simply use an active family/friend's e-mail address in the UK . . . but wondered whether anything necessary would be sent to it, and need responding to, for access purposes.

Wondered whether anyone here had registered with their e-mail address, and received anything essential back?

TorreDelAguila........When registering for iplayer, c4 etc I simply used my normal email address but located myself in the U.K using Browsec Chrome Extension....with regard to BBC Iplayer I recall that you can choose not to get any update info emails from them.

OK
I do have two Gmail accounts for use with playstore but I don't use it for sending or receiving emails.
one of them was set up specifically, pretending I lived in the UK, I used the post code of where I lived before moving to Spain, so I could download BBC iPlayer and those apps who insist that you have to "live" in the UK.

Using an Amazon Fire TV last night, a new 'sign in' icon had appeared at the top of the screen, which neded to be hit to progress further. The next screen offered a multi-digit access code, with the request that this was entered on to "your computer" via a BBC site. By hitting "back" on the Fire, the service operated normally.

Any additional info welcomed.

Now, as you watch the IPlayer on different gadgets, it should be seamless meaning stop watching on one half way through and now you can pick up at the same point on another.
Some people are a little worried because it might also that at some point in the future the email address will need to correspond with the TV licence.

Whether or not that is true, I have no idea but it might prove to be rather difficult, especially as in my case, my father didn't have an email address so I set it up with mine.

I can't work out whether the current registration process is for the purposes of tailoring, marketing or access. No doubt all three.
