JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
I keep being asked to update Java. However I have no idea what it is for. Is it the same as Adope! If not can I get rid of it as it is very annoying all these requests to update!

Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
Hi patricia,
Unfortunately some sites still require Java............until recently some Spanish Government sites required it.
"Java is a programming language that developers use to create applications on your computer. Chances are you've downloaded a program that required the Java runtime, and so you probably have it installed it on your system. Java also has a web plug-in that allows you to run these apps in your browser"
I don't have Java install on this system and not had any requests to have Java Runtime installed.
Uninstall Java and see how you get on...not a big deal if you have to get it back.

Personally I would do the upgrade keep it . Its free and doesn't take up a great deal of space. Once you have upgraded the messages will go until there is another
Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
Well I just wonder if it takes up run process etc when I start up which in my case is quite a lot 83% at the moment!

It's important to update as it might be for security reasons. If you uninstall it, you might find some programs or Apps will stop working.

Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
Due to all the security issues associated with Java I dumped it over 2 years ago and have never had any prompts that I needed it since.

Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
Unless you use it you shouldn't have it activated in your browser. It is a clear security risk, if you don't keep it updated all the time you are asking for trouble.
Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
OK I will delete it then.

Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
Many official Spanish websites (govt., banks) seem to me to have serious security flaws.
Recently I tried making an online payment to Tráfico, but couldn't because I just continuously got a message asking me to update Java (which they shouldn't be still using anyway). Even uninstalling and reinstalling Java wouldn't fix it, so I had to make the payment at the bank and then go to Tráfico. When I mentioned the problem, they just shrugged and acknowledged that it didn't work!

Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often

Re: JAVA WHAT IS IT FOR!
I always tried to avoid online transactions for the same reason, but it was for €8,30 and I was trying to avoid three trips to Málaga and all the hassle.
Solbank's website has a major security flaw: when you log out, simply hitting your browser back button will take you right back to your full account details, balance etc. If you try doing anything else you have to log in again, but you wouldn't want to forget to erase your history if using a public computer (which you should never do for online banking of course, but even so....)

When you live in UK, online facilities, however frustrating ( & many are !) are a godsend - I can pay contractors, electricity, hacienda etc without having to physically be there How much longer I will be able to do the Hacienda side of things will depend on whether I can get my digital sig &/or Cl@vePIN sorted....

Hi patricia,
"Is that to use your banking faculties! I didn't realise that if so I will use the private window in future"......Yes,
and always type the URL in full and not click on a link in an email purporting to come from your Bank.
