Windows 10 1709 Update

Postby Enrique » Sat Nov 18, 2017 2:53 pm

Hi,
FYI: The above is starting to roll out............it may be some time before you get to see it OR you may already have been offered it.

Before doing the Update make an Image Backup to an External drive so you can get back to your original system if you encounter problems.
Make sure you have a Bootable recovery media (That works) for your chosen Backup program .

There are problems being reported on some systems.

Please Post on your Upgrade experience........good or bad...........

1709 (16299.19) came out on 17 October, installed on my 3 machines without any problems.
Just updated to latest version of 1709, 16299.64 on 14th Nov, on my 3 machines.
Haven't found any problems yet.
Cheers

I turned off Windows Updates as soon as I bought my last Windows PC! W10 is bad enough without going through the problems with their interminable updates.

Hi Guys..............
To put a balance on things..............
From an Apple community .......15-Oct_2017

"Latest software update has rendered my iPad Mini Virtually USELESS !!
How can I Take It OFF, and revert to previous (WORKING) iOS ?!?
So Far, I have Restarted, closed all apps, reinstalled apps. It’s a Trainwreck !"

Makes delaying your (Windows) bed time for a few minutes quite calming............ :D

Well, if the person concerned had bothered to do a backup, it would not have been a problem. My iPad and iPhone back up to iCloud a few times a day.

Even Apple have some idiot users!

I found Windows update nice and easy. I have it on automatic so hardly any pain.

I’ve been checking cloud services and both Apple and Windows offer good deals.

I use Apple’s 99p for 50GB a month offer, enough for my basics along with free Google and Amazon cloud, which forms part of Prime, for my photos.
Anothe decent offer is 2.99 for 200GB, which can be used by other family members.

Windows one drive has 1TB and use of Office for 69.99€ a year

Hi Martin Page,
So Backup rolled on OK and back to pre 1709 in no time............... :?:

All the ones I've done.....Downloaded 1709 .iso and ran it from there..........no problems.

I failed to prevent MS taking over my PC and downloading this load of useless junk.

All it did was screw up a number of system settings, particularly the fact that if it wakes from sleep, it requires the ludicrous sign in routine linked to the Microsoft Outlook account that I do not want!

Why does MS think it has a right to do anything it likes with my property?

The only reason I still have a Windows PC is because I have been running a weather station program for 17 years which only runs on Windows.

I think it is time to get another program and move it to another iMac!

Sid, as you are probably aware tomorrow Apple are launching and making available to order the New iMac Pro......Happy Days

Maybe a bit excessive for a weather station

Yes, an amazing bit of kit, but what a price! If you need that power, no other major supplier gets near to it.

I shall stick with my 5K 27” iMac. The Windows PC is quite happy doing menial tasks such as measuring the wind speed, assuming some unwanted upgrade doesn’t screw it up again.

Hi El Cid,
" assuming some unwanted upgrade doesn’t screw it up again."..............if you set metered Connection you should only get Security updates for the version of Windows 10 you're running and not the "Featured" releases that now come out in months 04 and 09 .

The down side is a particular version i.e. 1511 will only be supported (security updates ) for 18 months from time of Release.

Great spec on that iMac, not so on the price..........

I did set it as a metered connection, but the update reset that. It also changed my connection to Public which prevented the printer connecting.

Every time it does an update that requires a restart, it insists on asking me to sign in. I have changed the security setting to try and prevent this but it did it again last night. Every time it happens my weather station is not connected so I lose the data.

I must have another look at the sign in settings.

Sid
