Windows 10 updates

Postby Wicksey » Mon Jan 22, 2018 5:43 pm

My laptop has been updating for about 20 hours now and I had to keep it on all through the night as it was still installing something.

This morning the whole thing had switched itself off and once I turned it on, away we went again with more downloading and installing (currently stuck on 99% installed) It says I need the latest version of Win10 so it can install security updates. I don't remember this problem before, or is this just a particularly major update? I also have a notification that it wants to restart but it looks like whatever is installing hasn't finished yet. I am confused

Hi Wicksey,
Sounds like you have the 1709 feature "Upgrade" installing.

Surprised it is taking so long.

From Microsoft Community............

"If the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant becomes stuck or unresponsive at various percentages: 0%, 32%, 62%, 87%, 99%, please wait at least 4 to 7 hours. If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 99% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation."
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Typical Microsoft!

Having taken over your PC without your explicit permission, it screws up and expects you to wait for 4 to 7 hours before you can use it again.

Not fit for purpose!

It eventually finished installing then restarted, but then took another 90 minutes to finish updating! Yes Enrique it was the 1709. I only put the laptop on that evening to have a look at something 'quickly' and then ended up with it being on and updating for the next 24 hours. Never had this before with windows taking so long.

Hi Wicksey,
Some settings that may make your Windows experience better............ :D

Set Active Hours........can have up to 18 hrs

"Set active hours to let us know when you typically use this device.
We won’t automatically restart it during active hours and
we won’t restart without checking if you’re using it."

Have Notifications set so you will get notified of the "Feature " Updates that come out twice a year in Months 03 and 09, but can be actually downloaded to your system some months after these dates........as you have found out, I too have some pending on some of my systems.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Why does any Windows 10 question have to be hijacked?

Some people prefer Macs and others Windows
