Windows 10 and Skype

Postby knowal » Wed Mar 21, 2018 10:54 pm

Recently I noticed that my desktop version of Skype had disappeared from my PC. There was not a trace of it. It seems that Microsoft (who have owned Skype for years) have decided to force W10 users to use the Skype "app" which I had deleted, rather than the desktop version. I suppose it saves them maintaining at least one version of the software.
Anyway, I looked to download the desktop version and Skype don't have it any more. They rather sneakily put a self deleting command in the latest desktop version, so it would be pointless to re-install it.

Skype now directs to install or download and use the "app" version in W10.
I don't like it much, but the thing I hate most is that there is little to see on screen that Skype is running. Nothing in the taskbar. A notification comes up when a message is sent, so it is running in the background, but I'd like to see something.

Has anyone else had knowledge of this. Skype is obviously in the startup process, but I have to use a shortcut to see my contacts, which takes a while to get going.

Any suggestions?

Hi White Horse,
Thanks for the heads up.........

I've kept version 7.40.0.151 and resisted the "update to latest Skype"

You can get older versions of Skype.............

I suspect that installing from File Hippo will result in an auto update which will delete it again.

Hi,
Did you try the direct link I posted from Skype (above)........... :?: I see that is ver 8.18.06

On another Windows 10 system I've ver 12.1809.217............that looks usable , difference seems to have all the settings in the Profile

My ver 7.40.0.151 just asks now and again if I want to update..............no auto-update.

Have either of you actually downloaded and installed the latest version, 7.41.0.101?
Works as expected on my Win 10 desktop.

I find Skype too massive, and if it is amongst your startup programmes it adds a long time. Normally we use our iPads with Facetime, but for non-Apple recipients the Messenger audio or video works well.

Sorry enrique, missed that. It won't allow a download, it takes me to the W10 "app" rather than desktop version.

Hi White Horse,
That's odd.......
If I click on the link as above , it takes me to Get Skype, the download file shows Skype-8.18.0.6.exe
If I scroll down the options to Classic Skype the download file shows SkypeSetupFull.exe

No mention of the "Win10 App" as in your Post..............

Thanks guys, I've decided to put up with it. When I try to get Skype that link tells me I already have the "app" installed after opening the "shop".
I love Windows 10 but Microsoft do have some control freaky stuff going on...

STOP PRESS
Just noticed the drop down list which allows download of classic Skype. I'm off to do it!

Thanks Enrique. It wasn't that, I'd missed the drop down list and I now have the desktop version back on W10.
Thanks to all!
