BEST VPN
BEST VPN
Do any of you use a proxy VPN. If so which one do you think is the best! There are quite a few however some are recommended more then others. At the moment I am using Hola which is free and seems to be fine, but I have read that they use your proxy for other things!
Anyone else using a VPN if so which one do you use!

Re: BEST VPN
Hi patricia,
SmartyDNS has a VPN option that seems to work OK, Wicksey uses it for "Real" so you should get a comment from her. I play with it from time to time and not had any problems. SmartyDNS has a very modest annual fee.

Hi Enrique, I will look at that! Thank for replying. I have not seen that come up at all when I have googled VPN's so will take a look. It is best to pay for one so as not to take a risk with being hacked and malware etc.

El Cid and Mark are into alternate connection types ( and heavy users) so will no doubt be along later to discuss .
It will also depend on what type equipment you wish to connect too, which one best suits your needs.

Re: BEST VPN
I use the computer to steam and look at it on the screen. The cable I purchased that worked for weeks which went from the computer to the TV now no longer works! No idea why. Such a bore because all the cables only fit my small HP but the streaming was poor and constantly stopped. But this computer is not modern so the cables cannot fit - as you know! - which is why one of those adaptors would not be any good as there is no - whatever they are called! - thingies to plug it in to!

Re: BEST VPN
I know you said it was old, but "I use the computer to steam" - surely it can be converted to electricity ?

Re: BEST VPN
Yes I can stream but as the computer is a reconditioned one it does not have the part to fit a HDMI cable. I cannot run it from a cable to the TV. I have to watch tv on the computer screen.

Hi patricia,
"The cable I purchased that worked for weeks which went from the computer to the TV now no longer works! No idea why."
Is the TV set source to HDMI still.............
If so then you need to check your Display port on the computer.

Most peope I know recommend Nord, they are based in Panama I think which means they don't need to co-opt with surveillance states like Britain if that is a concern.

Re: BEST VPN
My opinion still remains the same as before, you need to buy a dedicated tv streaming receiver and use a DNS because VPNs can slow your internet down
With your laptop being a little older and not having the correct connection, the processor might not be good enough to stream video well
Tell us what you want to watch and we can advise.

Re: BEST VPN
What is a DNS! I have no idea what the difference is. I see that is a dedicated tv streaming receiver. I did not know that was an option I have to say.
It has worked reasonably well with Hola Although yes it does stop mid way through a program at times.
I have just purchased 3 months worth from Smarty as all the others you need to buy for a year or so. I shall have to see how I get on and buy a DNS next time. I cannot even get on it at the moment as Iplayer is blocked!
Any tips on how to get going on smarty will be much appreciated

Re: BEST VPN
SmartyDNS is a DNS so you have one already. They also have a VPN service so you get both. Iplayer is blocked but you can use their VPN device to access the BBC on computers
You can download it from here
https://www.smartydns.com/vpn-app/
When you have done it, tell me and I’ll post step by step instructions on how to use it

Re: BEST VPN
I have downloaded it, but I cannot see where I go from there. I do not get an icon and even though I have actually got through to putting in my username and password it says error London not available!
I do not know where I go from here when it is already downloaded! Heeeeeelp

Re: BEST VPN
Don’t worry, you have done everything correctly because i get the same message.
The solution is to click into the SSTP tab under VPN protocol and click connect.
It is connecting fine on that and IPlayer is working.
