Windows 10 1803 Update

Postby Enrique » Thu May 10, 2018 9:39 am

Hi,
The Rollout of the above will be hitting a Computer near you soon.................

You get a choice for installing now or later.
At the end of the update the Privacy and other options will need a Yes or No answers..........

Homegroup has been removed............been problematic since Windows 7 days.

Your current Windows system is saved as Windows.old.............can be removed when you're happy with the "new" setup. It's circa 6GB of disk space depending on your system.

The Update time on a newish system is circa 20 mins.

Anyone getting problems please Post so we can get you sorted in a timely manner.............. 8)

Hi,
Now for the "possible" bad bits................
On an old system i.e. Pentium 4 3GHz 2GB Memory the update will take sometime...........hours, it will also use all the CPU ........90%+

They have removed some of the Features...............

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... d-features

There has been a Patch issued for 1803 that may cause a Boot loop..........

The workaround has been Posted........

Hola

Took hours on my three year old laptop (cheap Acer) and has taken four hours so far on the office HP laptop! The battery level icon disappears every so often so you don't know how much battery you have left.

Sad news about homegroup - have used it extensively

Hi dxf,
Thanks for Posting, your timings sound what to expect for the average user...........hence do it when you don't need to use the system.

"The battery level icon disappears every so often so you don't know how much battery you have left. ", recommend you have any laptops plugged in when doing the Update.

Hola Enrique,

After the update just using the computer normally, sometimes there is a battery icon, and sometimes not. It always reappears after a restart option instead of close down and then open up later - so far !!!

Hi Enrique

Pleased to report that all went well with both our aging laptops (one eight years, and one four years) - timed the update to happen overnight, so regret no timings available

Do you have a link to a trusted site advising on how to locate and safely remove windows.old please?

Thanks in advance

Vincent

Hi vinuela vinny,

Windows.old will automatically get deleted after 10 days.

You can use Storage sense to keep the disk tidy on a day to day basis ....................Settings --> System--> Storage.........Check the boxes

The above can also remove Previous Versions of Windows............ :D

Hi Enrique

Automatic deletion is even better - masterly inactivity, eh?

And thanks for the tip on storage

Hi,
For Members on Limited Monthly Download ..........set your system for Metered connection, you will (should) only get critical Security Updates.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-my/hel ... windows-10

Unless you require some of the latest "Features" there is no need to Upgrade every time a Feature release comes out...........

For example version 1607 support was end of support in February this year.

I updated two days ago. Took about two hours more or less. Nothing to report so far so good! No idea what it was meant to do and what was removed or improved. Hopefully security.

Thanks for this thread...
I looked for updates manually and found it and the download was fairly quick, considering I have a 55 Mb/s connection, the install took nearly two hours and the restarts around 30 minutes after that. Lots of settings, such as file associations, tap to click, external drive settings are reset, which is a little annoying, but the system is now working OK. I'm just glad I'm not a business that needs to take 3 hours of downtime for updates.

Greetings - Enrique in particular, and anyone else who can help .......
bought a new ASUS laptop THIS WEEK and have a limited, metered wifi.
ASUS VivoBook F540N, CPU Intel 2Core up to 2.4GHtz, Memory 4Gb. 1Tg, HDD 170, OS WIN18
Windows had some problems doing the basic updates on the metered wifi so off I went to the local library to connect on the towns system and low and behold the critical security downloads have worked fine and got configured, and even updated the HP printer driver too - BUT when it comes to this dreaded 1803 so far it has "failed" three times, including the one that took nearly 4 hours at the library this morning - just got to 100 percent download as I was getting kicked out for lunchtime. I was able to keep the screen open and watched it go on to "preparing to install", then back on plugged in power and back on limited wifi at home, it continued ... seemed OK and got as far as 15% "installing", then the bar appeared with a 0% but got no further, then surprise, surprise, the Updates Available box showed yet again that the 1803 was available for update and next time I was on an un-metered wifi, I could download it. FRUSTRATION is creeping in. In view of your notes in May, do you think I can get away with ignoring this pesky update on a new laptop, or am I off to the library for yet another try ... what do I need to do to make it finish its update?! Surely if it has downloaded 100% and gone on towards installing, it does not further need wifi, so it ought to be able to complete back at home? or have I missed something ? I have done a restart and it didnt seem to do any major configuring, though it did think for a lot longer than seems normal on both winding down, and then restarting.
Cheers - any help greatly appreciated
