sending emails being rejected

Postby chrissiehope » Wed Apr 03, 2019 9:18 am

A few times now I have had emails (to different addressees) rejected with the following message:

"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Bb2ehWWVjq3IvBb2fh8Fb4 message rejected due to spam or virus. If you believe this is in error please login to your portal or contact your ISP support team.. Please check the message and try again."

Is this a Thunderbird problem, or is the problem at the receiving end ?

Unlikely to be Thunderbird as when you hit the send button the mail is transferred to a mail server, then possibly additional mail servers until it lands in the mail box of the recipient.

So assuming that there are no viruses etc in your sent message one of the ail servers is rejecting the mail and sending you the error response.

If you resend the exact same mail by going into your sent folder and right click on the message select edit as new. Then hit send does it consistently get rejected?

Bizzarely, when I went to look for it, I found it in my Sent box ! I hadn't tried to send it, so it must have gone automatically - or does it just put an email in there as you've tried to send it ?

I just tried what you suggested, and I'm still getting the saqme message - looks like it wasn't 'sent' after all :-(

it will just get put into the sent box, because as far as Thunderbird is concerned the mail has been sent. It has no awareness that it has been rejected somewhere along the mail server chain.

Ok so next I would send as new again, but send it to yourself which depending on your thunderbird and mail box server may limit the mail to just one server, i.e the one that Thunderbird passes it on to.

In Thunderbird go to Tools->Account settings. Scroll to the bottom of the list of accounts and select 'outgoing server. This will show you the mail server that thunderbird uses for the initial mail hand off.

Next right click on your account in Thunderbird, select settings then server settings. This will be the server that hosts your mailbox. If they are both in the same domain, e.g mine are both 1and1.co.uk then the message is being rejected by your mail service/isp providor.

Is the message plain text or is there an attachment?

If there's an attachment are you sure it is virus free?

Remove the attachment and try send it...

Thanks for this - I have to go out shortly, so will give it a go when I'm back. There is no attachment, just plain text, so it's not that !

I'm back now & have followed your instructions - both outgoing server & server in settings show the same host - plus.net. So does this mean I need to contact my ISP ?

If you sent it to yousel and it bounced then theres a more than reasonable chance that it's plus-net mailserver rejecting the mail. The diagnose further gets a bit tecchy, so yes i would contact them as a next step.

Hi chrissiehope,
Looks like a general problem with plus.net mail servers........

Long thread on .........."False rejection of valid sender domain"............in recent weeks.

So if you got some spare time have a chat with ISP as suggested .................

Hi Enrique ( & casita-bonita !),
It's Plusnet - I will try & give them a call but tomorrow is a pretty full day one way & another, followed by a regular Friday morning visit to my Dad, so it may be Fri afternoon before I get the chance to call them !
Thanks to both of you :-)

Update
Realising I had my days mixed up, I called my ISP this morning. They got me to change the beginning of the outgoing server address, so hopefully I won't have the problem anymore !

Fingers crossed...

If it still messes up you can always configure thunderbird to use one of googles outgoing server but leave your incoming server settings the same.

Update to the update !
I tried to download my emails, and it wouldn't work, so I changed the settings back to what they had been & it worked perfectly. I complained to my ISP, and now it's a waiting game for the next failed 'send'.....

Did you changeboth the smtp server setting and the mailbox server setting for the thunderbird account? Sounds like you may have changed both if you cant retrieve email.

The sending and retrieving of email are two different processes using different protocols, hence there are different settins for each. It is perfectly reasonable to have completely different servers for retrieve and send. They dont even have to be the same provider.

In your thunderbird account set invoming server back to what it was when working. In server settings change the smtp server to whatever plus.net suggested you change it to.

Hopefully that'll grt it going again.

Failing that its simple to set the smtp server to be google, especially if you already have a Gmail account.
