The new version of windows does not have "homegroup" any more. They have changed the way to share files on a network. Another problem to create a work around.

The update became available today so I am just doing it. It's been stuck on 'downloading: 99%' for about an hour. Is this normal? The % went up gradually OK but seems stuck now.

Just come up with the message that it couldn't complete the downloading so it's cancelled the whole thing and I have to start again!

Hi,
On motorway typing problem
If u have time have another go

Added: if it fails again, you will need to download the . ISO file use Rufus to build it onto USB memory stick , Bootup normal windows system and from USB use setup and it will do upgrade. Step by step instructions can be found on Microsoft site.

Much easier to type in hotel room ⌨️

After 12 hours yesterday I gave up and am now trying using the Win10 Update Assistant app which I now remember I used before. Up to 87% complete in an hour so will wait to see if it works this time.

Hi,
If you're on 1809 then you don't need to upgrade to 1903 as it's supported 18months from release date..

It took 8 hours but it's done now. I guess at some point I would have to update it to the latest version and it was much simpler using the update assistant.

I'm sure you are aware that Wicksey has a very sloooow internet connection, not like your fast connection.
I have a not so slow speed connection I think most of my downloads and installs took something less than 4 hours but I left most of them running overnight or when I didn't need to use that particular machine.
So I didn't care whether it would take 8 minutes or 8 hours.
Cheers

Hi,
Follow on from Gerry's Post,........
Some Members would have come by Windows 10 from Windows 7 , and their systems will be fairly low spec.

Yes thats a possibility however having read many of Gerry's posts I get the feeling that he has if not top but close to it current spec machine(s) and they took in the region of 4 hours....which IMO vindicates my decision I posted earlier in the thread to bin my windows machine. To update; my iMac arrived, after unboxing plugged it in and entered current apple account set up on my ipad 2 yrs ago then 5 mins to set various things in the set up then Machine needed to update itself to latest OS Mojave which took a total of less than 40 minutes....then good to go....more than happy.

Yes, I now have a fast connection, but most of the time taken to upgrade Windows seems to be the installation, not the download.

OSX upgrades take minutes, not hours.

I'll have you know that I now get a whopping 8mbps now I have changed my ISP  My laptop is only a couple of years old and has always been Win10 so it's relatively modern. I must say it puts me off upgrading my older PC to Win10 as doing these updates on 2 machines each time would be a bit much :problem:

Windoze really do need to work out why customers are having to have so much downtime installing these updates. As Sid says other operating systems can be updated in minutes, why can't Microsoft's?

Windoze is, and always has been, a very bloated piece of software.
It tries to be everything to everybody and run on a wide range of machines not made by Microsoft..
Apple OS is very neat, and quick to install, as it is designed to run on a very small range of machines that are made by Apple.
So everything is tightly controlled.
Before moving to Spain I used an Amiga 1200 which had a very small and neat OS.
The OS came on a couple of floppy disks. Very quick to install and update.
But, as with Apple, it was only designed to run on a small range of machines.
I stopped using my Amiga as support and development of the OS and programmes more or less ground to a halt.
Can't afford to buy an Apple machine.
As I said before, Windoze is slow to update but I do most of it overnight so it doesn't bother me that it takes hours and not minutes as I am asleep.
Cheers

I recently set up a brand new HP All in One for a friend. The first thing it did was to download the latest updates, whatever they were (it didn't tell me). That took 11 hours on a 30mb connection.

When Windows 10 finally appeared on the screen, it immediately downloaded and installed another load of updates which took another 2 hours.

I now only support Apple PCs and W7 PCs. I had a full OS upgrade this week on my iMac. 15 minutes later it was up and running with all the previous apps in place on the screen.
