Same as you Sid, OS Mojave 10.14.6 full upgrade done on Monday to Macbook pro and iMAC took no more than 15-20 minutes on both machines...iMac slightly quicker and everything as it was in its rightful place before upgrade.

Hi,

"I recently set up a brand new HP All in One"..........doesn't mean it will have latest release of Windows, I've seen "New" systems with two year old outdated release out of the box.

I'm with Gerry on this one , so many combinations of Hardware , Windows dose surprisingly well as an OS.

For most users it doesn’t matter how long the download takes due to the fact it downloads in the background so you carry on doing tasks while it’s downloading. The PC cannot be used during the installation, which I didn’t time it but I don’t remember it being taking so long.

Times have changed and if users want to continue using their computers the same way as they did 10 years ago, then I’m not surprised, they find them clunky. These days photos and videos don’t need to go near a PC unless you want to view them on it. Everything is taken and edited on the Iphone and stored on the cloud for free..

The majority don't have, or possibly want, an iPhone.
Don't have an unlimited data allowance.
Prefer to keep my photos on my PC and keep them backed up on an external HD.

An Android phone would be able to do the same, especially when we are talking about Google photos and YouTube for videos, also owned by google.
In settings it’s possible to only upload vía WiFi. My observations are the in general and would depend on upload limits.

My WiFi comes out of my data allowance.
Don't particularly trust Google not to loose my photos or not to "look" at them to use for marketing purposes or to see who I know or where I have travelled.

I take photos on my Android which are stored on a mini SD card thereby not using the phone's memory, and can edit them to some degree but it is all too small for me. I attach the phone to my laptop with the USB to transfer and edit them there. I have them on my phone, my laptop and my PC plus backed up onto memory sticks. I wouldn't trust Cloud with them either and like to have things stored here on my own devices. I don't have internet on my phones (only PAYG and data use is expensive) and so have the photos easily available wherever I am if I want to show/bore anyone with them.

With Win7 losing support in Jan next year I am tempted to buy a new PC rather than upgrade my current old one to Win10. It seems that future updates may be more troublesome on an older PC that has been upgraded from Win7?? That seems to have been suggested on here?

Hi Wicksey,
Dealing with your last paragraph above.............
Although the Free Upgrade to Windows 10 finished some time ago, there is an open door.............

https://windowsreport.com/windows-10-free-upgrade-2018/

Depending on the spec (please Post) of your Windows 7 system going for a new system would be the best option.

Perhaps I'm lucky but I haven't, as yet, had any problems with Win 10 installs and updates on my PC or 2 of my laptops.
The 3rd laptop runs Win 7 and always will. Just use it for playing dance music.
None of them are new or high spec. The PC original run Win XP and the laptops Win 7.

Enrique as far as I can see I have Win 7 Ultimate (Copyright 2009) Service Pack 1. Cannot see where to find the current version.

The PC is Acer 6GB 64 bit.

Hi Wicksey,
That spec would run Windows 10 a treat
It now depends on how much time you want to spend on this project.

Hi All

Our laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 2.3ghz with 3gb ram and 300gb storage - whatever all that means - bought in November 2010......

The Windows 10 1903 update was apparently downloaded in the background, and then when we were prompted we scheduled the update to take place on our preferred day and at our preferred time. it took three and a half hours to install last evening. No problem whatsoever.......

Hope this might help someone who understands these things, or others like us, who do not......

Regards to all

Vincent

Opened up Windows this morning......lovely cool breeze as a result :lolno: then booted up my iMac (about 15 seconds). Wish I'd taken the Mac OS route years ago.

Hi,
Just noticed that a system with wait and see...............

""The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We're offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn't quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you'll see the update available on this page. There's nothing you need to do at this time""

Has gone to "Download and Install"..............a busy weekend ahead as already have a system down with Hardware issues.

I know you like your Mac but I’m in the UK for a week and want to pick up a new laptop while I’m here.
The laptop I’ve been using, bought 5 years ago starts up pretty quickly, about 30 seconds and from sleep less, so I will report back and compare how fast a new Windows 10 laptop boots

I will admit though, that the older ones take up to a couple of minutes but that might be because they don’t tend to be used much.

If the laptop uses an SSD drive it will boot more quickly. My iMac has what they call a fusion drive - which is a big hard disk with a fast SSD strapped to it. It uses the SSD for booting and running the apps.

Mine does have those specs. That’s a main difference when the two OS are compared. Apple is always the same but Windows is on a wide range of computers making it genuinely difficult to compare the two.

I wonder how one of the new branded Windows compares with a Mac. I should imagine favourably.

I’ve had a look at all 3 types, Windows, Mac, non-windows Pac, and I can get higher specs not going for a Windows or Mac for less money.
