Fax Machines

Postby P.A.D. » Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:04 pm

Hi All!

Can anyone tell me ( and all please forgive me if this is YET ANOTHER of my silly questions so far!)

Will we be able to bring our fax machine over to Spain or wont it work over there?

Any advice would be, as always, GREATFULLY received!

It may or may not work. You will definitely be able to send faxes but the automatic answer may not operate.

To be on the safe side bring with you a BT primary socket. If it does not work by plugging it directly into the Telefónica socket plug it into the BT socket then plug that into the wall.

Make sure that it is a BT primary socket with some electronic components inside NOT a secondary socket.

Fax machine

Go to a Maplin store in the UK and buy a BT-US adaptor. The catalogue reference is "VD36P BT/US Adaptor Cap". Don't get the cheaper version as it doesn't have the built-in ringing circuit that is needed to make your fax machine auto-answer.

Yes, as Aguilamike says, make sure the box you buy contains the ring capacitor as shown in the top photograph in this link. The slave socket will not do the job.

The link also shows how to connect the socket to the Telefónica circuit.

If Tandy still have stores in the UK you can buy it there as well.

The Maplin VD36P is a neat little unit that has the BT master socket components built in.

I've not seen that one before. It's much better because the plug is already fitted and you don't need to work out which terminals to connect it to,

Look at the rear of your fax. Remove the telephone line from the machine and look at the connector closely. If there are only 2 pins present (and they are next to each other) then you will not require an adapter, but you will need a new cable (which you should be able to buy in a fereteria).

The adapter is £4-99 but you will have to get a tax impulse filter to make it work on the Spanish system Maplin don't sell them, maybe someone out there will know

The Maplin VD36P costs £6.99 and I have had one working in Malaga for over a year without any additional items. The Maplin one priced at £4.99 does not have the built-in BT master socket components so a UK specification fax machine will never 'ring' or auto-answer any incoming calls.

We are using Panasonic KX-F130, telephone answering system with facsimile with no problem at all in different continents.

Hubby brought the machine back from UK and we simply plug into the
sockets. It works brilliantly with no problem at all.

Tax or meter pulses should not be present on normal lines as they are usually used by hotels. Is it not possible to get Telefonica to disable them?
